Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on March 25, 1936, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Darrol F. DeLong Sr., He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, graduating from Grady High School in 1953. He then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating in 1957, and later receiving a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Darrol worked as a Staff Engineer at MIT/Lincoln Laboratories for nearly 40 years.
Darrol met Meredith Packard at an MIT mixer, and they were married on June 11, 1958. They moved to Acton in 1962, started a family, lived on Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, and later built a house in Carlisle. He was an avid tennis player and scuba diver, active in community theater as a trumpet player. He found time to travel with his wife to varied destinations, including Hawaii, American Samoa, New Zealand, New Orleans, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, and Germany.
Darrol leaves behind daughters Laura DeLong, Susan Coulter, and Elaine DeLong, a grandson, Kyle Coulter (Erin Fitzmaurice), and great-granddaughter Keira. He was predeceased by his wife, Meredith, in 2020.
The family would like to thank Darrol’s caregiver, Dawn Huttoe, for her two years of service, allowing him to live in his home.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Darrol for visiting hours from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at the Concord Funeral Home, 74 Belknap Street, Concord. Burial will follow at Green Cemetery, Carlisle.
