Darwin L. Schmidt, 68, of Fond du Lac, died Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the SSM Health Hospice Home of Hope. He was born in Fond du Lac on April 28, 1956, to Magnus “Butch” and Betty (Hersey) Schmidt. On July 15, 1978, he married his high school sweetheart, Brenda Oaks at Church of Peace in Fond du Lac. Together they raised three children, Andrea, Christopher, and Erin. She preceded him in death on June 23, 2012. On August 25, 2014, he married Pamela “Pam” Berger in Fond du Lac.
Darwin graduated in 1974 from Goodrich High school and was selected for the “Who’s Who Among American High School Students” in 1972-73. He earned an Associate Degree in Water and Wastewater Technology from Moraine Park Technical College where he was selected “Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges” in 1986-87. He also earned an emergency medical technician-intermediate certificate and law enforcement certification. In 1998 he was also selected as an Outstanding Young Man of America Thirty First Anniversary Edition.
He has held many positions throughout Fond du Lac City and County, to include President of the Fond du Lac City Council, Economic Support Specialist/Fraud Specialist and the Village of North Fond du Lac as an Emergency Medical Technician. With his most notable position as a Sergeant with Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Jail Division and Deputy Reserve for the Sheriff's Office.
Darwin enjoyed spending time with family and friends and had a great love for animals, to where he owned a pet store called The Bird Cage in Fond du Lac. He also enjoyed painting miniature dragons, playing D&D with friends and watching war movies and the History Channel.
Darwin is survived by his wife, Pam; children, Andrea Behnke, Christopher (Kea) Schmidt, Erin (Nathan) Delzer, and Samantha Berger; grandchildren, Anthony, Camren, Keeton, Ethan, Koi, Skyler, and Shiye; siblings, Wayne Schmidt, Barbara McKinnon, Beverly Fitch, and Debra (John) Hunt; as well as nephews and nieces. In addition to his parents and first wife, Brenda, Darwin was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis Schmidt, and Scott Schmidt.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM with Paul Osterholm, Sr. officiating. Entombment in Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Memorial Park, will follow the service.
