On December 27, 1965 Dave was born to Margaret Lea Johansen and Dave Lee Oveson in Riverside, CA. He was the oldest child and was soon joined by his siblings Stephanie, Stacie, Del, and Summerlynn. The family relocated to Utah and Dave was raised in Castle Dale.
Dave was multi-talented and enjoyed success in many areas growing up including rodeo, baseball, band, and debate. He graduated from Emery High School in 1984 and attended Snow College that fall. Upon graduation in 1986, he attended Southern Utah University where he met his wife, Janae Lyn Jorgensen. They began dating in January 1988 and if there were one day of the year that most matched Dave's personality for a wedding proposal, it would be April Fools Day. He proposed to Janae on April 1, 1989 and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on March 17, 1990. This month they would be celebrating 35 years of marriage.
They made their first home in Elko, NV where Dave was working for the Newmont Gold Mining Corporation. It was here he launched into a career in the emerging technology industry. They moved back to Utah shortly after their marriage and Dave continued working in technology until he retired four years ago at the age of 55. He loved the energy of being part of new start-up companies and being on the cutting edge of the latest advancements. His career included work at Geneva Steel, KeyLabs, Novell, Exodus, Omniture, Altiris, and Adobe.
Dave and Janae enjoyed many adventures as they experienced life together. He shared his love of snowmobiling with her and taught her to ride so she could go with him from the very beginning. He wanted her to be part of whatever he was doing. They enjoyed four-wheeler rides and exploring, traveling and cooking together. Dave regularly surprised her with date adventures and get away's and brought her home fresh flowers whenever he was out and about. She held his heart and he loved her completely.
Dave's life changed forever when their first daughter Alexandria Shae was born. This beautiful little curly haired girl expanded his heart from the moment she arrived. A few years later another beautiful little girl, Natalia Brooke, was born and expanded his heart even more and he became an amazing girl dad.
Dave and Janae devoted themselves to teaching, loving, and supporting their daughters in all they chose to do. Dave loved being able to participate in and be part of Alexandria's softball experiences across the years, regularly coaching her teams. He sat on a bucket and caught thousands of pitches she threw his way (and also took a good number of pitches off his shins and ankles!!) We always felt he deserved his own state championship rings alongside her handful!
Though he didn't have the skillset to coach and help Natalia in the same way in gymnastics and cheer, he loved and supported her by being in attendance every time she was competing. The family followed both girls to all of their events and they travelled and explored together and grew and learned and enjoyed their life together. So many shared experiences and so much love wove together the fibers of his family's souls.
He was so proud of his girls not only for what they learned and accomplished, but for the beautiful women they are inside and out. As a girl dad, it brought him so much peace that he loved the good men they married and trusted they would always take care of and be good to his sweet girls.
Dave lived his life loving and taking care of Janae and their girls, but everyone who knew him will likely associate him with other things he enjoyed as well – cooking and grilling, his 80's rock music, his time on his horse Tonka in the mountains herding cows during his teenage summers, concerts, Los Angeles Rams football games, classic cars, reading, and beaches. His good-natured banter was present in so many conversations. His presence is deeply missed. His infectious laugh is missed. And his advice and guidance daily is missed. He was so loved.
He was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with his favorite calling being teaching the 6 year-olds in primary. Dave was preceded in death by his brother Del (Margaret) Oveson. He is survived by his wife Janae and daughters Alexandria (Jordan) Mackey and Natalia (Isaac) Johnson. He is also survived by his parents Dave and Margaret Oveson, Stacie (Darin) Thompson, Stephanie VanDyke, and Summerlynn Blackburn.
Dave left this life unexpectedly and suddenly on March 4, 2025 at the age of 59 due to cardiac collapse. His desire was to be cremated. A private family viewing and farewell was held on March 8. A funeral service honoring Dave's life will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 11:30 am at the Salem 6th Ward chapel (470 East Salem Canal Road, Salem, UT). There will be a brief opportunity to visit with Dave's family from 10:30-11:20 a.m. prior to the service.
