David Hoffman Butler passed peacefully at his home with family by his side on April 19th 2025.
David was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, on February 21st 1946, to Harlan and Julia Butler. He was raised on the family ranch west of Wheatland. After graduating from Wheatland High School, David joined the Marines Corps, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged in 1968. He returned to the ranch to help his parents and later began working as a heavy equipment operator.
David was an avid game hunter and fisherman. He was also a talented gunsmith and enjoyed building replicas of historic rifles and repairing personal firearms. He began with a small shop on the family ranch and later established a part-time shop in Sheridan.
David married Catherine Royal Hattan, the love of his life, in October 1990. Together, they made a life in Sheridan, Wyoming. Upon moving to Sheridan, he went to work for the City of Sheridan, where he worked for 16 years.
David enjoyed teaching young people about gun safety, hunting safety, and shooting. He was a hunter's safety instructor and a member of the Sheridan County Sportsman's Club.
David is survived by his wife, Catherine Royal Butler and his stepchildren.

Very sad to hear about Dave's passing. He was a very interesting, intelligent man and I enjoyed seeing him out at the range years ago. He knew alot about the shooting sports and was always willing to help a fellow shooter and answer his or her questions. RIP Dave, you will be missed.
