David Cox, of Day, New York, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the age of 84 at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, New York. Born on July 30, 1941, in
Plymouth, New Hampshire to Henry Randall Cox and Elvira Jane Lowell Cox, David graduated from Ballston Spa High School in 1959 and from Union College in Schenectady NY in 1963 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. After graduating college, David worked for the NYS Department of Transportation and the NYS Canal Corporation. His work earned him the honor of being named Engineer of the Year for 1992 by Section One of the New York State Association of Transportation Engineers. He ended his career as the Director of Maintenance and Operations for the NYS Canal Corporation.
Outside of his professional career, David had many different roles and accomplishments and was heavily involved in his community. He was the Scout Master of Troop 18 in Greenfield Center from 1982 to 1986 and was an active member of Boy Scouts of America, earning the Silver Beaver Award and the Award of Merit. His two sons later went on to become Eagle Scouts, and his daughter earned the Gold Award for Girl Scouts. David was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Ballston Spa, for which he served as Chairman of several different committees: Trustees, Elders, Budget, and Building. Additionally, he was also a member of the Capital Area Baptist Association and the Greenfield Fire Department 1.
David also had a great love for the outdoors. He was licensed by the State of New York as a hiking and camping guide for the Adirondacks (including boating and canoeing), a member of the ADK Mountain Club, and was an Adirondack 46er. In the town of Day, where he resided for the past 36 years, David served as Chairman of the Planning Board and was a member of the Board of Assessment Review. David was also passionate about genealogy research and took many trips with his wife Dianne to research their family trees. He passed this passion on to his granddaughter Sara.
David was predeceased by his parents, two of his sisters, Janet Brown and MaryLou Lattrimore, his nephew Kevin McKenzie, his great-niece Tara McNulty, and his great-nephew Marty Baylies Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Dianne Harrison Cox, their children William Cox, Timothy Cox (Rebecca Balzac), and Laura Cox Marino (John Marino), their three beautiful grandchildren Sara Jade Zlotnick, Adrianne Anna Cox, and Benjamin Harrison Cox, of whom he was very proud, his sister Nancy Cox Harrison (Donald Harrison), two sister-in-laws Judy and Janet Harrison, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Above all, David loved his family very much. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, son, and friend that anyone could ask for. At his passing, he was surrounded by his family. His surviving relatives will miss him forever.
David's family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the compassionate nurses and doctors at Saratoga Hospital.
