David Lee Dierking, 52, of Indianola, Iowa passed away in his home on January 12, 2025, surrounded by his wife and boys. He was born to Robert and JoAnn Dierking in Spirit Lake, Iowa on February 21, 1972, and baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at an early age.
Dave grew up on the family farm in Spirit Lake, where he learned to work hard by doing chores and working in the fields. After the work was done, there was always time for play and finding trouble with his brother, Kenny. He was involved in 4-H, football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, track, slow pitch softball, and various other activities throughout his early years. He took pride in his 2 younger sisters, and provided a brotherly oversight to ensure their protection.
After high school, Dave attended Simpson College and was a proud brother of the ATO fraternity and member of the Simpson Track Team, throwing shot and discus, but being fast enough to be the alternate on the 4x100 and 4x200 teams respectively. In addition, he earned an IT degree several years later through Vatterott College, graduating after the birth of his 1st son TJ. Dave worked various jobs throughout college including farm work, landscaping at Cutty's Resort and later for Bowlin Landscaping, and UPS becoming a supervisor of his night shift.
Dave started his career with Doors Inc. in 1996 in the key room. Quickly learning the skills of the trade, he moved into the position of Project Manager overseeing various contracted projects for the company. Not only did David handle his project manager duties, he fulfilled the company's IT work needed on the side. Once more, the company would find they needed Dave in a new role, fulfilling the General Manager position overseeing the Des Moines location and becoming Vice-President of the Company as a whole, where he would remain for the next 10+ years.
Dave met the love of his life, Kristi, in 1991 on Simpson College's campus. While they did not date immediately, they ran in the same circle of friends, until Dave finally found the courage to ask her out in 1994 for a mean game of darts (which he knew he could win). Both being big family-minded yet highly competitive people, they enjoyed time spent with family and friends, playing in slow-pitch softball and competitive volleyball leagues, and working with people with disabilities. Dave and Kristi were married on September 27, 1997 at Smith's Chapel on Simpson's campus. They settled down to start a family in the country, south of Indianola but close to Kristi's parents. Dave put in countless hours helping Phil Hommer build their home to raise their family. In June of 1999, they welcomed their first son, TJ. In the years to follow, they would be blessed with four more sons, Tanner (02), Tate (05), Taren and Tucker (the twins 09). These boys and Kristi were the most important treasures in Dave's life.
Dave was a man of few words, but how he treated others and made people feel was something those who met him truly understand. He had a smile that welcomed you and a personality that put people at ease. Dave had a natural gift of drawing people to him, especially small children, and he had a way of winning them over. Kristi referred to him as the Gentle Giant, though his stature was big, his demeanor full of kindness and gentleness. He was a loving husband, amazing father, fantastic son (in-law), great brother and uncle, and good friend to many. Dave would do anything for anyone that needed help and was a huge supporter of the school and athletics. Dave had a passion for cattle and had started his own herd operation with his children over the past several years, spending countless hours researching bloodlines, locating good matches for his program, and setting up feeding schedules to maximize performance. Dave was also passionate about his equipment and property, utilizing tractors to keep the driveway and landscape smooth and level, and mowers to meticulously maintain a lawn of perfection in specific patterns and style. David was an avid supporter of his kid's activities/athletics at SE Warren in football, wrestling, track and field, baseball, and FFA, as well as, cheering on the Hawks and Cyclones and being a lifelong lover of the Florida State Seminoles!
Dave is survived by his wife, Kristi and their sons TJ, Tanner, Tate, Taren and Tucker all at home; brother, Kenny (Cyndi) Dierking of Boone; sisters, Christine Bergum of Story City and Kathy (Shane) Akers of Leon; brother-in-law, Wes (Abbey) Duncan of Van Meter; father-in-law, Jim Duncan of Milo; sister-in-law, Deanna Hommer of Liberty Center; and many nieces, nephews, and their families.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Milton and Miriam Dierking, Edward and Kathryn Koupal, his mother Jo Ann, father Bob (Robert), nephew Koby Clary, and mother-in-law Karen Duncan.
We will miss him immensely!
Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 20, 2025, at the Indianola First Assembly of God Church. Cremation will follow services, with burial at a later date in the Liberty Center Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Memorials may be given, in Dave's memory, to the family to be decided at a later date.
