David was a man of many passions and talents. These included fishing and fly tying, water skiing, scuba diving, downhill skiing, tennis, archery, duck hunting, making his own arrows and hand loading his own cartridges, biking, photography, kayaking, canoeing, birding, walking on beaches and in the woods, skeet and trap shooting, reading history and biography, wooden boats, museums,, photography, classical music as well as music of the 40s, 50s and 60s, and gardening. He taught himself to do electrical work, plumbing, and carpentry enough to build 2 bedrooms and a bathroom for his daughters on the second floor of our cape. He built a kayak himself and also refinished an antique wooden row boat which we rowed and showed at Mystic Seaport.
He loved traveling and enjoyed family vacations every summer, tent camping at national and state parks from Quebec's Gaspe to Hatteras National Seashore to the Florida Keys. Later, he and Carol traveled to Germany and Austria, spent 3 weeks driving around France staying in "Relais de Silence" and another 3 weeks driving around the UK: Scotland, Ireland, England, and Wales. He also spent 2 weeks in an RV with Carol in Alaska, fishing for salmon, and 2 weeks in San Francisco and Hawaii. After David retired, he and Carol were able to go on week long trips to Venice, Florence, and Paris. He and Carol went five times to Bermuda and twice on bonefishing trips to a remote island in the Bahamas accessible only by boat. In more recent years, they took two Viking River Cruises on the Rhine and in Provence.
David had a wonderful smile, warm and inviting nature, and great sense of humor which he retained until the end. He was full of fun and mischief with a twinkle in his eye. He was always kind and generous with a desire to help everyone and a handshake or hug for all. He always put his family first and will be missed by them, his friends, and all those he touched. David's family would like to thank all who helped him through his journey with dementia. His last caregiver at home told us he was too good for this world and shared the lyrics by Andrea Gibson, "Don't say goodbye, forever is not too far, the other side's just a stone's throw from love and you've got a great arm."
