David Dreyer Obituary

David R. Dreyer
Born: March 4, 1946 in Chicago, IL
Died: January 19, 2026 in Woodstock, IL
David R. Dreyer was born in Chicago March 4, 1946 to Raymond and Grace (Deck) Dreyer, at age two years, the family moved to Ingleside, Lake, Illinois.
Dave graduated from Grant High School, going on to Luther College, Dave majored in Spanish and Biology. He married Julia Hansen in 1968; they had two sons. Dave spent a year at North Branch Minnesota as a Spanish teacher and then enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his testing, his recruiter discovered that Dave had an aptitude for piloting. Dave flew C130's throughout the 6 years he was in the military. In April 1975 he flew his C130 on multiple rescue missions out of Tan Son Nhat airport. His last flight out was on April 25th.
In 1975 Dave began teaching Science at Crystal Lake Central. He met and married the librarian Trudie Strong in 1982. Dave had an affinity for hands on science; for example, utilizing a slot car hot wheels racing track. His room was the "supply room" providing such necessities as kite string, waxed, unwaxed, white, orange, narrow gauge, wide gauge ... Dave loved every aspect of being a teacher, truly loved the students. He taught a total of 35 fun filled years.
Dave was member of the Tree of Life Unitarian Church and when called upon for service did more than required, including Choirs and The Frothyboys a drinking group with a singing problem. He assisted for several years with the traveling PADs program. Over a period of 36 years, Dave became the chief engineer of a G-scale model railroad that lovingly became the focus of the backyard; he was a member of the Chicago Area Garden Railroad Society.
It was Dave's involvement with Barbershop Choirs: Lake Geneva Country Gentlemen and Ladies and New Tradition that garnered even more involvement and an additional lifetime bucket of friends. More than anything he relished the joy of singing together in a group.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Heath Kennel.
He is survived by his wife Trudie, blended family consisting of stepson Richard Strong (Audrey), son Arek (Heather Jagman), son Karl (Lisa Finnegan) and daughter Kathleen, his sister Carol (Mark) Aymar. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, mother Rachel Brunacini, Kaelan, Chandra, Liam, Lachlan, Killian, Riordan, Carrick, two nephews, Peter and Ethan Kennel, mother Stephanie Kennel Phillips, one niece, Mona DeFiore, a grandniece, Gabriella Watkins and two grandnephews Joseph and Mikael Watkins.
Dave's family would like to thank Northwestern Medicine for circling the wagons around him 4 plus years ago and Journey Care for extending that circle.
In the spirit of Dave's philanthropy to numerous causes/charities, his family asks that you pick a beloved cause of your own and donate time, resources, etc.
There will be a Celebration of Life at the Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation February 15th 2-4 p.m.

Trudy and family,
I am not surprised to see Dave lived a varied and full life. As a fellow teacher at Central, I knew students enjoyed being in his classes, and he was so respectful of them. I was also able to be at his train garden one summer. It was a wonderful experience knowing him.

To Karl & Arek & Family,
You have our sincere sympathy on the passing of your dad. The humor he shared along with the unforgettable Moscow Mules are memories of fun times we had with him. We were lucky to meet him. God bless you all!

Mr. Dreyer was my teacher and wrestling coach. I will always remember his kind nature and his smile. He encouraged me to join the wrestling team at CLCHS. I was an average wrestler but the experience of wrestling changed the direction of my life. Mr. Dreyer not only taught science but he helped me get pointed in that right direction. Thank you coach! Sending my love and prayers to Mr. Dreyer and his family and friends.

Dave was a cherished friend and teammate. He had the ability to touch every kind of student. I watched closely. Dave was always kind to the adults as well, asking if he could help in any way. I was very touched when he brought his singing friends to sing to my mom in a Woodstock nursing home. He was always open to processing the best way to improve education , and to work on improving the world for all.
He will be greatly missed.

I refer to Dave as a "teaching buddy" of mine. We aligned closely in caring for every soul we taught and striving to enhance our skills in delivering quality education to every one of them. I´m grieving his passing and my sympathies to Trudy and family.

So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. We were good friends in High School (1964), enjoyed Spanish class together, played football, and were both in the Air Force and in Vietnam. Will miss seeing Dave at High School class gatherings.

I hesitate to use this adjective but Dave was a sweet man to me. So kind and patient and helpful, all with a gentle humor. I coached wrestling when I started at Central (only spot open; didn´t matter that I knew nothing about it) and Dave took me under his wing (not literally in a wrestling move) and ran the practices. He made those young men feel safe and valued and he did the same for me as a new teacher and a know-nothing coach. What a great start for my career at 155 with Dave as a role model. Showed me right away what was important.

I am going to miss Dave so very much. He often let me know how much he appreciated his Tree of Life community and me, no matter what challenges he was going through himself. That was Dave. Thinking of others always. I'll miss singing with him and his absolutely wicked humor always launched at just the right time.

I am so sorry. Tell her of the loss of Mr. Dreyer. I was a student at CLC from 1983-1987 and remember he and Mrs.Dreyer fondly. Just recently told my husband a story about one oh his classes just a couple days ago. What a big beautiful life he lived. Just learned so much about him that I didn´t realize as a child. Prayers for Mrs.Dreyer and family. He has quite the legacy

I was saddened to learn the news of Dave´s death. Upon reading his obituary, I found myself smiling , laughing and teary eyed. It certainly tapped into so many cherished memories I had with Dave at Crystal Lake Central. Dave was such a strong , kind and caring man who had a wonderful sense of humor. He went above and beyond as an educator impacting and shaping so many lives. He was a good listener too. Trudie and family , please accept my condolences.
My mind is racing with so many precious memories. May you find peace and comfort in the days ahead.

Trudie I am so sorry to hear this. Dave was first a teacher then a mentor and finally a friend. I always enjoyed his visits to the shop talking trains and life he will be sorely missed.
