David Driscoll Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 13, 2026.
With heavy hearts but cherished memories, we announce that our beloved dad, David J. Driscoll, 90, of Jackson, MI went to be with the Lord on December 9, 2025. While we mourn his loss, we take comfort in knowing he is reunited with the love of his life, our mom, Stella A. (Holody) Driscoll of Hillsdale, MI. They were married in 1957.

Dave was born in his parents' home in Jackson, MI in 1935 to Harold A. "Hal" and Isabel M. (Tracy) Driscoll also of Jackson, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Harold "Sonny" Driscoll, Richard Driscoll, and sisters Joan Driscoll, Mary Jo Zurn, and Elizabeth "Betsy" Driscoll. Dave is survived by their five children, Linda (Bob) Waldo of MI, David (Sally) Driscoll, Dianne (Jeff) Zottoli of MA, Daniel (Nancy) Driscoll of MA, & Lisa (Mike) Sawtelle of FL. He is survived by 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Dave graduated from Albion High School in 1953; Hillsdale College in 1958 and received his Masters Degree from University of Detroit in 1966. Dave was a well known local high school teacher & coach & he loved teaching biology and coaching football. He was one of the coaches from the Jackson Area Football Coaches Assn that started the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (where he served as their 1st President) and helped develop the High School Football Play-off system in Michigan. He is in the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Hillsdale College Charger's Athletic Hall of Fame as a part of the 1956-58 record setting football team. Dave also coached football offensive backs at Michigan State University under Muddy Waters.

Dave thanked the Lord every day for everything that God had placed in his life starting with his wonderful parents, wife, family, teachers, coaches, friends and great people he interacted with all of his life. He spent his later years traveling to spend time with his grown children and especially enjoyed watching all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren compete in sports.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend visitation Wednesday, January 21st from 9 - 10 am followed by 10 am funeral mass at St Mary's Star of the Sea, 120 E. Wesley St., Jackson, MI 49201. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to St Mary's Star of the Sea.

When I heard of his passing, a lot of memories came flooding back. Like every player who he coached, he had a profound impact on me and my life. He could be a demanding task master because he expected your best...regardless of how good that was. He had a heart of gold inside that gruff coach exterior. When things didn´t go your way, he was there for you. He taught you the value hard work and discipline. I saw him about 20 years ago at a fundraiser and, even though I hadn´t seen him in almost 30 years, he recognized me when I went up to shake his hand. I´m not sure if he´s coaching or playing, but he´s still got everyone playing the right way.

To the Driscoll family, I want express my condolences to all of you! Mr. Driscoll and I go back to 1963 at Parkside High School where he was a teacher and football coach. We´ve remained acquaintances since. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. I´d see him at St. Mary´s mass often. He was a man of faith and lived his life accordingly! God bless and prayers at this difficult time! Jim Quillen

I remember him as a great teacher and a very nice man when he would come to the 1967 PHS class reunions. Condolences to his family. Surely the angels met him on his way.

RIP Coach Dave. Your were much more than my PHS football coach as I considered you my undesignated mentor who instilled in me, vicariously, a spirit of not giving up, diligence in my tasks and respect for others. I take comfort that you have joined your fellow PHS coaches on the heavenly gridiron.

Great coach and even a better person. I relive memories of Mr Driscoll almost daily. He expected the best from everyone. He was a big part of defining my core values.

I am sorry to hear of Dave's passing. My condolences to his family.
We had lunch together in the fall and then visited the oil wells in Calhoun, Hillsdale & Jackson counties. Dave was full of information & enjoyed sharing his knowledge. I will miss him. May the angels welcome him into paradise.
