David Joseph Ertle, born on March 13, 1949, in Bayonne, New Jersey, was a man who lived his life as a beacon of strength and generosity. Raised in Spotswood NJ and became a resident of
Toms River, NJ since 1978. On June 20, 2025, David completed his earthly journey at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, New Jersey. His legacy is one marked by faith, family, and a profound commitment to service.
David's life was one of deep Christian faith, which he nurtured and shared with all those around him. Married to his beloved wife, Sally, for 51 happy years, David was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they raised a family that reflected their values and passions. The proud father of David Jr., Susan, and Daniel, father in law of Laura and Charlie and a doting grandfather to Maitland, Caroline, David, Benjamin, and Peter, he instilled in them the virtues of kindness, perseverance, and the importance of family bonds.
David's siblings - Joseph and his wife Jean, Kathleen Mc Allen and brother-in-law John McAllen(deceased), George and his wife Mary Jo, Mary Beth and her husband David, Robert and his wife Jeanne, and Thomas and his wife Lisa - were an integral part of his life. Together, they shared innumerable memories and supported each other through life's myriad of journeys. Though his parents, Joseph and Marie Ertle preceded him in death, the foundation of faith and family they instilled in David became the cornerstone of the beautiful life he built.
An alumnus of St. Peter's University, David's intellectual vigor and dedication to his community were evident in his illustrious career with the Ocean County Utilities Authority. As Director of Maintenance and Head of the Fertilizing and Manufacturing Division, he was pivotal in the creation of OCEANGRO. This innovative, eco-friendly biosolid fertilizer was a testament to his vision and commitment to sustainable environmental practices. His professional achievements are a legacy that will continue to benefit generations to come.
David's love for the outdoors was matched only by his desire to share it. A seasoned fisherman and boater, he taught his sons and many others the art of navigating the waters of New Jersey. His boat was more than a vessel; it was a classroom where life lessons were imparted. David was also an avid game hunter, committed to teaching hunter safety and respect for nature.
His volunteer work with the Forked River Elks Lodge #2581 showcased his philanthropic spirit. There, he helped orchestrate the Annual New Jersey Wild Game Dinner, raising funds for the families of fallen heroes, as well as other causes thus embodying his belief in community and service.
Generous, loving, and faith-filled - these words capture the essence of David. He will be remembered not only for the life he lived but for the lives he touched. His spirit, passion, and teachings will continue to resonate within the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate enough to have known him. To know David was to experience the warmth of his generous heart and to witness his unwavering commitment to his faith. He never missed an opportunity to uplift others, and his motivational spirit was like a beacon of hope in a sometimes turbulent sea.
As we honor the memory of David Joseph Ertle, we celebrate a life that was truly a reflection of Christ's love. He walked this earth with purpose, touched lives with kindness, and left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. David's journey has not ended; it has merely transformed, as he is now navigating the celestial waters, guided by the eternal light of the love he so freely gave.
May David's story continue to inspire us to live with purpose, to love without reservation, and to serve with all our hearts.
