David Fitzgerald Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sunset Funeral Home, Cremation Center & Cemetery on Feb. 2, 2026.
David Edward Fitzgerald, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, at Heart to Heart in Evansville, Indiana, with his beloved family by his side. Born on September 20, 1955, in Tiftin, Ohio, David's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, commitment, and service.

David's journey began as the son of Guy and Geneva Fitzgerald, and from a young age, he was instilled with a strong sense of duty and compassion. After completing his education, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 12 years, a period during which he developed a deep-seated respect for discipline and camaraderie. His time in the Navy was a foundational experience that shaped the rest of his life.

Following his honorable discharge, David transitioned to civilian life and embarked on a career as an over-the-road truck driver. His work took him across the country, but no matter how far he roamed, his heart remained firmly anchored at home with his family. David's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Mary Kay Fitzgerald, and a guiding light to his three wonderful children, Jennifer, Rebecca, and David II. His role as a grandpa to Ravyn, Blayz, Aaliyah, Madison, Hiedi, and Colton was one he cherished with every fiber of his being.

David's siblings, Deena Miller, Pam Biller (Don), Guy Fitzgerald, Daria Sweazy (Ben), and Kathy Yost (Mike), knew him as a steadfast brother who could always be counted on for support and laughter. His extended family, including many nieces, nephews, and his sister-in-law Rebecca Andrews, will remember David for his unwavering kindness and the joy he brought into their lives.

Preceded in death by his parents and Linda Gail, David first wife and the mother of his children, David's legacy is one of enduring love and the bonds that tie a family together through life's many seasons.

Beyond his family, David had a passion for life's simple pleasures. He was an avid poker player, a hobby that brought him much joy and friendly competition. David's love for poker was how he met his Mary Kay. In retirement, he found solace and satisfaction in working on his home, tending to his yard, and maintaining their vehicles. These activities were more than just pastimes; they were expressions of his love and care for the life he built with Mary Kay.

David's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with the threads of dedication, joy, and an unwavering commitment to those he held dear. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the indelible mark he left on our hearts and the countless memories we will forever hold dear. David Edward Fitzgerald's story is not one of an end but a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire and guide us all.

Family would like to welcome all to a Memorial Service at St Boniface Church at 418 N Wabash, Evansville Indiana. Service begins at 1130 with time to visit beginning at 1030 on Wednesday February 4, 2026.
