DAVID GRAINGER Obituary

GRAINGER--David W. David W. Grainger, Senior Chairman of W.W. Grainger, Inc., passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, at the age of 97. He was preceded by his beloved wife, Juli, and is survived by their three children, Susan L. Grainger, Thomas P. (Elizabeth) Grainger, and Nancy Burgermeister, and four grandchildren, James T. Grainger, Kristen E. Grainger-Kruse and Lauren L. Grainger-Peters; and Scott M.W. Burgermeister. David was born in 1927, the son of William Wallace "Bill" Grainger and Hally Ward Grainger, the same year his father started the family's business, W.W. Grainger, Inc. David grew up in Hinsdale, Illinois and attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, where he graduated in 1945. In 1945, David enrolled at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. His education was interrupted by twelve months service in the Army Air Force as the manager of the Airborne Radar Tech School at Boca Raton Air Base. He was honorably discharged in 1947 and followed this with five years of service as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Force Reserve. His interest in flying expanded and he earned his own private pilot's license in 1947. David graduated from Wisconsin in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. There he fueled his life-long interest in electrical technology, efficiency, and application. Another very important consequence of attending The University of Wisconsin was meeting and marrying his college sweetheart, Juli Plant, a very attractive and talented 1948 graduate in Economics. Even though Juli had graduated two years before David was scheduled to graduate, he was able to convince her to stay in Madison until they were married in June 1949. After two years working for Franklin Electric, a Grainger supplier, in 1952 David joined W.W. Grainger, Inc., which his father had founded 25 years before, and where he spent his entire business career, as the Company grew to be a Fortune 500 leader in sales of maintenance, repair, and operating products worldwide. David served as Chairman and CEO of the Company from 1968 to 1997. During his leadership, the Company grew to have more than 15,000 employees and over $4 billion in annual revenues. David's tenure helped establish the Company's reputation for fair-dealing and customer service. David was known for both his innovative approaches and his keen attention to all aspects of the business. In 1949, the Grainger family established what would become The Grainger Foundation, a charitable non-profit organization. David headed the Foundation as President and then Chairman from 1979 until 2021. His talented wife, Juli, had a major involvement. Through the years, the Foundation and the Grainger family together have provided a high level of charitable grants, primarily in support of education, health care and many cultural institutions, focusing on programs and projects that "make a positive difference." In 2019, the Foundation made the most recent of several major donations to the University of Illinois, and its highly ranked engineering school was named the Grainger College of Engineering, in honor of William Wallace Grainger, who graduated from Illinois' electrical engineering program in 1919. Other similar donations have been to the University of Wisconsin. The Grainger Foundation has had long-standing broad relationships with numbers of other institutions, including The Museum of Science and Industry, Mayo Clinic, Rush University Medical Center, The Field Museum, The Chicago Symphony, The Art Institute of Chicago, and WTTW. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of W.W. Grainger, Inc. from 1953 to 2007, David was a member of the Boards of Baxter, The Northern Trust, and A.M. Castle. He also was a Life Trustee of the Museum of Science and Industry and of Rush University Medical Center. David and Juli, long-time residents of Winnetka and Lake Forest, loved to entertain and travel, whether by boat, plane or private railroad car. They also shared a love of golf, and enjoyed spending time at their vacation homes in California and Michigan. David leaves behind a rich legacy of principled leadership, a quietly generous record of philanthropy, devotion to family and friends, and an abiding curiosity throughout his life. David was a longtime member of the Kenilworth Union Church, Kenilworth, Illinois. Memorial services will be private with the family. A gift in memory of David Grainger may be made to the Kenilworth Union Church, 211 Kenilworth Avenue, Kenilworth, Illinois 60043.

Not sure what to say?

God's Peace to the family and friends of David Grainger. I thank him for all the ways he chose to show his appreciation for his employees. He had a special lace in the hearts of the nursing staff who were blessed when he stopped by our Health Center. I had <13 years at Grainger and personally felt his warmth and kindness when I received a call from him while at home on a medical leave that I shared with him I would be taking. On return to work, I went to his office to thank him for his call. We both had a good laugh when he declined my offer to show him my new knee. I cherish my friendship with this honorable gentleman.

The news of Mr. Grainger's passing was devastating, a moment that brought time to a standstill. For those of us who worked at Grainger, his presence was more than that of a leader; he was the heart of a family we all felt honored to belong to. He inspired a sense of purpose and pride, and his legacy is etched into the lives of those fortunate enough to be a part of that family. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of so many. I was blessed to know you and proud to call you my friend. Rest in peace Mr. Grainger.

The Lovell Family sends our sincerest condolences to the Grainger Family. Over the years, David Grainger was a good friend to our father, Jim Lovell, and helped him with various projects. His generosity was beyond enormous. His Foundation provided funds to refurbish the Adler Planetarium Sky Theatre which reopened in 2011 and was then named The Grainger Sky Theater. A larger-than-life size bronze sculpture at the Johnson Space Center in Houston depicting the safe return of Apollo 13 astronauts was made solely possible by the generous contributions of the Grainger Foundation allowing the historic moment in space exploration to be shared with the world and inspire the next generation of explorers. And when my mom passed, out of the goodness of his heart he donated to the charity of her choice. And when I sent the thank you note he called me to let me know how lovely it was!
Mr. David Grainger will be missed by our father and our family. Our prayers go out to his family.

I was a young man, at the early stage of my involvement with the Business School Advisory Board at the UW School of Business, when David made a transformational gift to challenge the State to fund a new building which is named Grainger Hall. Years later we were both involved in another gift project to keep the name of the Wisconsin School of Business as it is for at least 20 years. I always thought it was the measure of the man that David also asked that the signage on Granger Hall be made smaller in the spirit of the "No Name Gift"

David was unique and a wonderful personality. He will be both remembered and greatly missed.

My condolences to David's family. He will be missed by them and the multitude of employees who have benefited by working for the company that his father started. When I joined Grainger in 1981, I looked out my window, and saw his parents, Bill and Hally, pull into a parking space, get out of the car slowly while using the car for support, and then join arms and walk together vigorously into the building with their heads held high. Bill predeceased Hally and when she passed I left a note on Daves's desk saying: May the angels-and your Father- greet your mother and lead her into Paradise. My note to Dave today is: May the angels, your Mother and Father, and the multitude of employees and others who you have helped by your management of the Grainger Foundation greet you with a standing ovation and lead you into Paradise where, because of your generous contributions, the streets will be guarded by the wounded Marines that you have helped!

David Grainger was one of the great men of his generation. He did so much for so many, yet never wanted to call attention to himself. Truly remarkable and a model for others. I consider myself fortunate for having had the opportunity to know him. David, rest in peace. You've earned it.

My husband, Peter Sauer, was the Grainger Chair here at the University of Illinois. When David was still able to attend the Grainger Awards ceremony I was seated at the same table as David. I remember being nervous since he was such an important person. He must have sensed my nervousness since after we were seated he turned to me, introduced himself and said, "So where do you enjoy spending your vacations?" Such a pleasant, gracious man!

I was a Grainger employee for 50 years. I knew both, his father and him. I had the privilege of playing competitive Squash Rackets with him at the Leaning Tower YMCA when the company was on Howard Street. My fondest memory was our lunch together for my retirement. He took me to Lovell´s. David was a real gentleman and always was a champion of his employees. My condolences to the entire Grainger family.

I worked for Grainger for 37 years. On this day I met Mr Grainger. I asked him if I could take a picture with him. He looked at me and said " How long have you worked for the Company I said 35 years. He then said " I guess that long enough to get a picture with me." You will never hear me say one thing bad of the way I was treated in my 37 years with Grainger. He was a great man to work for.

January 13, 2025

Very sad to learn of his passing. I worked at Grainger for 17 years, starting in `97. David was still an active presence at the company when I left in 2014. I always admired his commitment to charitable giving, especially the time when the matching gift limit was boosted to allow people to respond to a disaster without impacting the match for their other gifts-and then never lowered again.

i sent a note of thanks to Mr. Grainger quite a few years ago whie employed at Grainger. He was gracious enough to call me at my desk to thank me for the note In the note, I had thanked him and his family for providing a workplace that provided my family fabulous lives. Our daughter graduated from UW Madison and attended the school of business in Grainger Hall. . That triggered a conversatiion since he met his wife at UWMad. It was a lovely conversation and made my day!
Years later, in 2021, when I was retiring, I sent another note of thanks to Mr. Grainger, sharing some of my full circle moments at Grainger and some fun stories. He was kind enough to invite me for a visit in his office.
Mr. Grainger was always such an honorable and polite man. I never heard anyone say anything negative about him. May he rest in peace and may we all cherish the good memories he provided. My condolences to the Grainger family. and my thanks, again, to Grainger for all it provided to my family and me!
