David L. Havert, 89, passed away Monday, September 10, 2012 at Woodview Health Care Center. Born in Ft. Wayne, David was an Army WWII Veteran Paratrooper with the 11th Airborn in the Pacific Theater. He was an engineer with Nickel Plate /Northfolk Southern Railroad for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the VFW. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. His family was very important to him. He enjoyed raising horses and trail riding. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Havert; daughters, Gina (Jay) Gerbers of Ft. Wayne and Anne (Barry) Dunlap of Pinellas Park, FL; sons, Jeffrey Havert and Jon (Diane) Havert both of Ft. Wayne and Michael (Rochelle) Havert of South Port, NC; sister, Linda Weilbaker of Ft. Wayne; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. David was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Hermia Havert; sisters, Rebecca McCormack, Mary Amstutz and Louise Hahn; and brothers, Robert and Ivan Havert. Funeral service is 10 am, Saturday, September 15, 2012 at D.O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Avenue with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Friday at the funeral home. Burial in Highland Park Cemetery. Memorials to Pet Food Pantry or Shepherd's House. I lived on the next street north in the East End and went through elementary and high school with my friend and basketball teammate Mike Havert. Dave was a genial man and a supportive father who worked hard to see that his kids did well. It's great to see that he lived to a ripe old age.
