David Herring Obituary

Visit the Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory - Lubbock website to view the full obituary.

David F. Herring, 77, of Lubbock, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, February 16, 2026. David was born on December 3, 1948, in Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas, to the late W. C. and Lydia Herring.

David attended schools in the Roosevelt ISD and graduated with his senior class.

David was a glazier by trade and worked alongside his father, W. C. “Dub” who opened a family glass shop in the mid 1960’s. After the 1970 Lubbock tornado totally destroyed their shop, the pair went to work for local glass companies. ‘D,” as he was affectionately called by his co-workers, trained many young glaziers and had a heart for a hard worker like himself. David had the opportunity to work alongside his Midland, TX, Herring family group of glaziers, but he turned it down to be closer to his parents.

David also loved guns and was considered a gunsmith and was a ham radio operator. He was a lifelong drummer and well known musician in the 60’s and 70’s, and played with White Stone, Street Theater and recorded with the Herring Gowdey Band. He also loved drum practice, boating, fly fishing and camping in the Gila Wilderness.

The family would like to convey their special thanks to longtime friends and neighbors, John and Margie Gonzales.

Those left to honor and cherish his memory include a daughter, Temple Wolfe and son-in-law Leroy Wolfe who was invaluable in Daddy’s last two years of life and grandson, Joshua Herring, who he helped raise with the help of his parents and considered him to be a son. David is also survived by his nephew Bobby Vines and his wife Janet, as well as many wonderful cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W. C, and Lydia Herring; his daughter, Nikkie Evans; a sister, Mina Vines and husband Gil; a niece, Linda Stroud and husband John, as well as a grandson, Spencer Goyette.

Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be held at 2 PM on Monday, February 23, 2026, in the Venue on Broadway, 2202 Broadway, next door to Combest Family Funeral Home. Justin Whitley of Tahoka Trinity Church will be the officiant. Cremation arrangements and memorial services are under the personal care and direction of Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
