MORTON – David M. "Dave" Hicks, 79, of Morton, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Carle Health Methodist Hospital in Peoria.
He was born on May 23, 1945, in Alton, Illinois, to Dean and Bernice (Miller) Hicks. David married Connie Gunion on June 24, 1981 in Palmyra, Missouri
Surviving are his wife, Connie Hicks of Morton; stepdaughter, Lori (David) Johnson of Creve Coeur; stepson, Bob (Lisa) Fortner of Morton; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Jim (Gloria) Hicks of Punta Gorda, Florida and Jerry (Carolyn) Hicks of Tallahassee, Florida. He was preceded in death by his two children.
Dave served in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1968 where he did three tours in Vietnam
For years, Dave was an advocate for veterans in Washington, D.C. where he worked to help them get the benefits they deserved.
He was also very involved in the American Legion where he was Post Commander of the American Legion Post 318. He also served as the Illinois State Commander as well as 16th District Commander.
Dave organized and operated the beer tent for the American Legion Post 318 for over 20 years during the Morton Pumpkin Festival.
Dave loved his family and the time he spent with them. He especially enjoyed sharing his love for fishing with them. Dave also was an avid hunter.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Military honors will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at the American Legion, in Morton. A celebration of life gathering will follow the honors at the American Legion from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday.
