David Hiles Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cotner Funeral Home on Feb. 21, 2024.
On 20 Feb 2024 at 0500 hours CPO David G Hiles hoisted anchor and set sail for Eternity and into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Chief Hiles, age 70, passed peacefully into eternal life following a prolonged battle with multiple health issues. Dave is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Natalie Shawne (nee Switzer), his daughter, Amber (Bob) Wagner, Grandson Jacob (Lindsay), and Great-grandchildren Emmy and Wesley. He is also survived by his sister Rebecca (John) Costello and brother Mark (Lisa) and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev Glen and Belle Hiles and brother, Jeffrey. Dave was born 18 Feb 1954 in Portsmouth, OH. Following graduation from Lucasville Valley High School in 1972,
Dave immediately enlisted in the United States Navy and began a career that spanned 24 years. He retired in 1996 as a Chief Petty Officer. Early in his tenure, he served on the USS Kansas City (AOR-3) a newly commissioned replenishment oiler that supported Naval operations in the South Pacific during the Vietnam War. He later served on a WWII era fleet ocean tug, the USS Moctobi (AT-105), until the ship was decommissioned at the Long Beach (CA) Naval Shipyard. He then transferred to the USS Gray (FF-1054) before transitioning to shore duty in Willow Grove, PA, Ravenna, OH and Columbus, OH. Following his retirement, Dave worked as a dispatcher for Certified Oil for 15 years before returning to serve the military as a procurement officer for the DOD Defense Logistics Agency in Whitehall. During his nine years with the DLA, Dave was deployed as a civilian at age 57 to Bagram Afghanistan and Forward Operating Base Shank with a forward Marine detachment. When not in service to the military, Dave enjoyed the outdoors hunting and fishing with relatives, friends, and fellow veterans. He also treasured his many travels with Natalie across the continental 48, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Australia as well as dusting off his dress blues to escort his bride to many Marine Corp balls. A lifelong car enthusiast, he enjoyed spending his weekends at car shows displaying his meticulously restored 1966 Pontiac GTO. Last November, Dave participated in Honor Flight Tri-State. He cherished the opportunity to tour Washington DC with a plane load of veterans and their escorts and was extremely proud to have been escorted by his niece, Rachel (Costello) Miller. In recent years as his health declined, he was blessed to get connected with Disabled Veterans Outdoors, an Ohio- based 501©3 that provides outdoor recreational experiences to disabled veterans. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Dave's memory to the DVO. The mailing address is PO Box 2; New Lexington, OH 43764.
His family will receive friends Monday from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the Cotner Funeral Home, 7369 E. Main Street, Reynoldsburg.
Graveside service with Military Honors to be held Tuesday, February 27, at Dayton National Cemetery.
