David F. Karibo, D.O
June 9, 1939- January 24, 2023
David Frederich Karibo, D.O, age 83, of Metamora died peacefully at home with family at his side.
He was born in Detroit to Dr. Charles and Anna (Goodman) Karibo. He graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School in 1957, where, as he walked through the doors each day, he read, "Teach me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge." David embodied those virtues throughout his lifetime. He graduated with a B.A from Detroit's Sacred Heart Major Seminary in 1961, and attended St. John Theological Seminary in
Plymouth, Michigan, for two years, followed by studies at the University of Detroit. He then pursued his medical career at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in 1969 as a diagnostic radiologist.
He completed his internship and residency at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital Corporation. He spent most of his career working at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital Warren Campus (formerly Bi-County Community Hospital) He led and participated in the set-up of ultrasound programs early in his career, and later was responsible for bringing ultrasound capabilities to the Oxford Pregnancy Center, where he worked as a volunteer. David retired in 2016 from Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospitals (formerly St. John's). David belonged to numerous medical associations. He was a life-long learner and attended many seminars and conferences each year to further his medical knowledge. He especially enjoyed passing on his skills to student doctors during their residency rotations with him. He subscribed to and read countless medical journals.
At home, David loved spending time outdoors. He took long walks through the woods alone or with family. He spent hours chopping and stacking wood, and using his leaf-blower to make a path through the never-ending blanket of oak leaves each autumn. Snow plowing was a pleasure rather than a chore. Cross-country skiing was a favorite winter sport, and putt putt golf was a fun summer family activity. He was physically fit, working out with weights before and after work each day. He'd played hockey in high school and enjoyed watching the Detroit Red Wings. He attended many of the U of M football games. During his illness, he participated in Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson's. He'd been a member of the Brave Hearts men's group at St. Joseph's.
David was a brilliant, funny, wonderfully quirky man. Most of all, he'll be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and cheerful disposition. His signature response to the question "How are you?" was always, "I'm fabulous and getting better!" David is survived by his loving wife Janet (nee Schwarz) Karibo and cherished children Collin Karibo, Rory (Lauren) Karibo, April (Jeff) Meganck, Holly (Chris Drohan) Karibo, Kali (Jamie) Karibo, step-children Tara Phillips (Chris Gebbon) and Chris (Tonya) Phillips: Grandchildren Joshua, Justin, Brinkley, Brody, Jack, and Claire. Step-grandchildren Kai, Luna, and Xavi; Sisters Joan (Michael) Allor and Terry Allor, special niece Chrissy (Sal) Cuccia and nephew Noah (Heather) Allor; sisters-in-law Judy (Tim) Horonzy and Jerilyn Schwarz.
