David Komes 1945-2025

David Earl Komes, age 79 of Hinckley, Illinois, passed away on August 14, 2025 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on October 29, 1945, in Aurora, Illinois, to the late Earl and Louise (Baumann) Komes. Dave graduated from Batavia High School in 1963.

Dave married Sandra Mae Runge on May 8, 1965, at Sacred Heart Church and they recently celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, DeKalb, Illinois.

He was employed as an iron worker with Local 393 and worked at Garbe Iron Works in Aurora for many years. Later, he started Quad County Steel Service with his son.

Dave was an avid outdoorsman, and hunting and fishing were in his blood. He also loved tinkering with antique vehicles and motorcycles. He enjoyed as much time as possible in Hayward, Wisconsin, and spent winters in Florida with Sandy.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sandra; his daughters, Rhonda (Tom) Oker and Teri (John) Gurchiek; his son, Chris (Stephanie) Komes; and his daughters, Amanda Komes-Leifheit (Jon Yeater) and Abigail (Tony) Michels. His grandchildren include Madeline Gurchiek, Benjamin and Margaret Komes, Lydia Oker, William, and Mallory Leifheit. Great-grandchildren Camden and Avery, brother Don Komes (Sheree), brother-in-law Fred Runge, sister-in-law Linda Babcock, as well as many nieces and nephews who were like his children.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Judy Runge and Jane Wood, and brother Doug Komes, father and mother-in-law Fred and Louise Runge.

A prayer service will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at 3:30 p.m. with his visitation to be held following from 4-7 P.M. at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Dr., Sugar Grove, Illinois. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in Dave's name be made to Fishing Has No Boundaries, Inc., Hayward Chapter, P.O. Box 375, Hayward, WI 54843
