David Kozak Obituary

Kozak, David John
3/26/1940 - 10/12/2023
David J. Kozak, age 83, passed into eternal life on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023, exactly 60 years from the day he married the love of his life, Clairice (Grzeszak), who survives him. He is also survived by his three children: Michelle (John) Grypma of Grandville, Michigan; Brian Kozak, of New Orleans, Louisiana; and Gary (Ann) Kozak of Hudsonville, Michigan. He will be terribly missed by his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Andrew (Amanda) Grypma, Nick (Erika) Grypma, Rachel (Tyler) Kamstra, Aleyna and Cooper Kozak, Brantley, Kaiden, and Baylor Grypma, and Krew and Baby Kamstra; and sister-in-law, Barb Grzeszak. David was very proud of his service in the United States Army where he served as an Honor Guard for President Kennedy. He was employed and retired from Spartan Stores. He liked to say he retired so he could help care for his grandchildren and spend more time fishing and golfing. Dave loved to go to the cottage in Irons and has fond memories of his years at Canadian Lakes. He devoted much of his time to The Knights of Columbus #4362, chairing bingo. Over the 18 years that he spent there, he made many friends and raised a significant amount of money for various charities. Dave "Papa" will be deeply missed by his loved ones, friends, and his 5 granddogs. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Michigan Cremation and Funeral Care, 3627 Linden Avenue SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49548. Family and friends may gather on Friday, October 27, 2023, at the Knights of Columbus #4362, 5830 Clyde Park Ave. SW, Wyoming, Michigan, 49509, at 5:00 p.m. Military honors will be rendered at 5:30 p.m. by the U.S. Army and Kent County Veterans Honor Guard, followed by a celebration of Dave's life and a meal. Per his wishes cremation has taken place and he will be buried at St. Sebastian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Michigan Veteran Homes at Grand Rapids or the Knights of Columbus #4362 Charities. Sorry to hear of Dave's passing.
We were neighbors growing up on Lila St.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Dave from the many years of playing hockey and golf with his grandson Andy. He never missed a sporting event. The love he displayed for his family could be seen from miles away as he made it a point to never miss out on an event. One of the things I admired most was how his relationship with his grandchildren stemmed way deeper than just a grandparent, but rather as a friend, mentor and mutual respect.

My condolences to the Grypma family, and Clarice. While he may no longer be with us, the legend of Dave will still live through all those that were lucky enough to spend time with him.
