David Lay Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 23, 2026.
David Anthony Lay (70) of Burnsville, NC, went to be with Jesus on January 28th, 2026, after battling Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) for the past few years.

David was born on September 16, 1955, in Berkeley, CA, to Robert and Shirley Lay, who later moved their family to Phoenix, AZ, where David grew up. After graduation, David moved to Mobile, AL, where he met and married Naomi (Lusk).

David was a modern day renaissance man as he had a variety of interests and skills. David enjoyed old school photography, independent filmmaking, construction projects, reading, listening to music, writing books, laughing with friends, and discussing his faith. David was a hopeless romantic and an Anglophile with a love of Jane Austen books.

David loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He loved his family and friends and desired that they all know Jesus, too. David wrote his final book, My Holiday in Heaven, while battling MSA. His younger sister Jennifer Wildman and his nephew Jacob Wildman are currently editing his book and hope to have it published on Amazon in the near future.

David is survived by his wife of 35 years, Naomi (Lusk) Lay, as well as his sisters, Patricia Heldt and Jennifer Wildman. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Vernon Lay, his mother, Shirley (Parente) Lay, and his brother, Jeff Lay.

David was known for his compassion, kindness, patience, and his wonderful sense of humor.

David's family would like to express their deep gratitude to the wonderful staff at Madison Health and Rehabilitation in Mars Hill, NC, who cared for David with so much kindness and compassion during his final year with MSA.

A memorial service to celebrate David's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 28th, at Mt. Celo Church in Burnsville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Advancing Native Missions (advancingnativemissions.com).

David's wish is to be remembered as a child of God. That is his legacy.

Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is respectfully serving the Lay Family.
