Obituary
David Andrew Matis, 78, passed away on August 26, 2023 in Cumming, Ga. He was born August 5, 1945. His parents were Joseph B. and Julia Erickson Matis of Hammond, Indiana.
After graduation from high school in Hobart, Indiana, David joined the U.S. Air Force to serve his country, serving at RAF Woodbridge, England; Minot AFB, North Dakota; Keflavik Air Station, Iceland; and Moody AFB, Georgia. He retired after having served honorably for over 21 years in the U.S. Air Force achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Earning him the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one Silver and one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with four Oak Leaf Clusters, and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.
David had a larger than life personality and charisma and made friends in almost any situation. His humor was a joy to those around him. With his jokes and funny phrases, David was a true "sport model". He was incredibly intelligent with a lifelong curiosity and an interest in random facts and information which he passed along to his children. He had an incredible work ethic. His favorite hobby was fishing. He also had a love of motorcycles and sports cars, driving a Nissan 350Z, stick shift of course, well beyond what was practical displaying the license plate "350geezer".
David was a great man whose impact will be forever felt by his family, who loves him dearly. David leaves behind his children, Karl Matis (Judy), Paul Matis (Janet) and Sheralyn Matis Wesson (Donald). He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Ashley Vann, Adam Matis, Brandon Matis, and Cameron Matis and one great-grandson, Holden Vann. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph W. and Mary Matis and his grandson, Joshua Matis.
Services will be held Monday, October 16th, 2023 at 11:30 am in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga. with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, we ask for a donation to be made to David's favorite non-profit, the Wounded Warrior Project, or a veteran's charity of your choice.

Like so many friends made while in the Air Force, I lost touch with Dave after rotation back to the states.
He was a good friend while we were stationed in England, and I remember the "road races" we enjoyed between Felixstowe and the bases my Spitfire winning in the curves and that green Hornet gaining on the straight stretches ---- all on the wrong (left side) of the road driving American cars...
Dave was definitely one of the good guys and I know he'll be missed....
