Cremation SourceDavid Alan Matthews, age 85, of Macomb, Michigan, passed away peacefully on February 12th, 2026. He was born on February 28th, 1940, in Ishpeming, Michigan.
On August 19, 1961, Dave married the love of his life, Sue. Together they settled in Warren, Michigan, where they built a home filled with love, laughter and family. Moving to Macomb, Michigan upon retirement. They shared 64 wonderful years of marriage.
Dave dedicated 40 years of his career to Eastpointe Community Schools (formerly East Detroit Public Schools), serving as a consultant for students with disabilities. He was especially proud of creating a preschool program for children with special needs that continues to serve families today. In addition to his professional work, Dave served on the Board of Comprehensive Youth Services and was an assistant Boy Scout leader for Troop 1945, positively impacting countless young lives.
A lifelong train enthusiast, Dave repaired model trains for Lionel and contributed his expertise to The Glancy Trains Exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum. For many years, he also worked part-time at P&D Hobby and Train Center Hobbies, sharing his knowledge and love of model trains with the community.
In retirement, Dave continued to give back by volunteering with the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department and the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. Above all, he cherished time spent with family and friends by playing cards, cribbage, sharing stories and simply enjoying one another’s company.
Dave was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Matthews. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue (Bengtson) Matthews; his children, David (Marsha) Matthews Jr., Jon (Holly) Matthews, and Melody Sienkowski (Paul Cueny); his grandchildren, Justin (Kristiena) Olechiw, Leanne (Darrell) Jones, Charles (Alayna) Matthews, Matthew (Kaitlin) Sienkowski, Kristi (Jami) Boyce, Madison Saylor, Jeffrey (Shirley) Cueny and Rita Kleehammer; his great-grandchildren, Amira, Emma, Arabella, Adrian, Julian, Connor, Atalia and Daniel; his brother Paul (Bea) Matthews, sister-in-law Germaine Matthews and sister-in-law Christine(Steven) Hughes.
A Mass will be held Friday, March 6th, 2026, at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, located at 48115 Schoenherr Rd., Shelby Township, MI 48315. In-state visitation begins at 9:30 a.m., with Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. A luncheon will be held immediately afterward.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Comprehensive Youth Services (comprehensiveyouthservices.org) or the Humane Society of Macomb (humanesocietyofmacomb.org)
Dave’s legacy of service, dedication and deep love for his family will live on in all who knew him.
