David Michael McCalman II of Andalusia, Alabama passed away at UAB Hospital on Sunday, August 18th, 2024 at the age of 59. A memorial celebration to honor his life will be held at First Baptist Church of Andalusia on Friday, August 23rd, 2024 at 10 AM, immediately followed by a graveside service in the Andalusia Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held with the family at First Baptist Church of Andalusia on Thursday, August 22nd, 2024 at 5 PM. The family would love to hug those of you who prayed so fervently for his healing.
David was preceded in death by his father, David Michael McCalman, and is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Stacie Collier McCalman of Andalusia, Alabama; his three children, David Michael McCalman III, MD, Elizabeth Collier McCalman, DMD, and Hannah McCalman Henley, DMD (Parker) all of Birmingham, Alabama; his mother Duane Duncan McCalman of Andalusia, Alabama; his brother Patrick Steven McCalman (Valarie) of Andalusia, Alabama and two nephews, Patrick Steven McCalman II "Cal" of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jack Davis McCalman of Auburn, Alabama.
David was born in Auburn, Alabama to David Michael McCalman and Duane Duncan McCalman on January 18, 1965. He spent most of his childhood living in New Orleans, Louisiana playing in the canals, fishing in the bay and developing a lifelong love of football. His family moved to Arab, Alabama where he graduated from high school in 1983 and was voted Mr. Arab High School. Always a big Auburn football fan, he attended Auburn University and graduated with a degree in Psychology. During his time at Auburn, he was very involved in his fraternity and the Student Government Association. He was elected to the honor societies each of his four years and was even awarded the Katharine Cooper Cater Award, which honors the top sophomore student every year. Following his dream to become a physician, he attended UAB School of Medicine, graduating in 1991 in the top twenty-five percent of his class. Along the way, he met and married the love of his life, Stacie Leigh Collier, and they began their beautiful love story that was the foundation of their lives. He then completed his residency in family medicine at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham, and in 1994, they moved to Andalusia, Alabama to begin his medical career. He opened his primary care practice as a solo provider, where he served his community for 29 years. It was one of the greatest privileges of his life to provide medical care, direction and guidance for his patients.
David and Stacie raised three beautiful children, Michael, Elizabeth and Hannah, who brought him immeasurable joy every day of his life. He was involved in every aspect of his children's lives. He knew every test they took, every drama in their lives, every sniffle they ever had. Of all the hats David wore, being a father to his children was his greatest joy. David treasured being a part of his community and serving in many ways. He loved teaching Sunday School at First Baptist Church of Andalusia and enjoyed being a leader in his community by serving on the Andalusia City School Board of Education. He had a passion for the game of football from a very early age, especially high school football within the state of Alabama. This led to one of his most enjoyable roles as the play-by-play radio announcer for the Andalusia High School Bulldogs. He loved getting to know all the players and coaches, sharing his knowledge of football history and statistics, and the thrill of calling the plays during a live game. One of his most treasured football memories was calling the game for the Bulldogs during the 2022 state championship playoff in Jordan Hare Stadium at Auburn University. He was so proud of all those boys and coaches, and he loved being a small part of that celebration.
David truly enjoyed serving the community of Andalusia over the last 30 years in any way he could. He was born with a true servant's heart, with no desire for praise or recognition. David served simply because it brought him joy and brought glory to God.
The pallbearers will be Toby Atkinson, Alex Atwater, Ben Bowden, Bob Burkhardt, Page Gamble, Shannon Glenn, Lex Short and Danny Solomon. Each of these men have been dear friends of David's for many years, and he would have been honored for them to help him to his final resting place.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in honor of his beloved nurse practitioner, Melissa Davis, who has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). You can easily donate to the ALS Association online at als.org.
Foreman Brown Funeral Home will be handling the funeral arrangements.

David was always a source of support and encouragement to my son, Will Harrison both on and off of the football field and baseball field. His dry sense of humor kept us smiling all the time. Thank you, David, for giving us the joy of the services we were a part of at that time of our lives.
