David Marvell McComb, Jr., 81, of New Jersey, passed away on May 13, 2025, at Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel, NJ, after a courageous five-month battle with congestive heart failure.
Born on November 15, 1943, in Glenn Cove, NY, Dave was the son of David McComb Sr. and Blanche McComb-Zolek. Dave grew up by the sea-an upbringing that sparked his lifelong love for the outdoors and adventure. His early years were filled with fishing, ice skating, collecting baseball cards, and nurturing the independent spirit that would define his life.
At just 17, he joined the U.S. Navy, proudly serving in aviation aboard the 6th Fleet during the Cuban Missile Crisis, alongside his brother Patrick. Stationed across Florida and Louisiana, he traveled extensively during sea operations throughout the Mediterranean. He fondly recalled his time abroad-visiting Barcelona, Malta, Cannes, the French Alps, Rome, Pisa, Athens, Monte Carlo, Istanbul, and Guantánamo Bay (where he marveled at the clear water and the sharks beneath his ship).
After his military service, Dave worked with his father at Tip Top Bakery before launching a career at AT&T in Newark and later as an electrical/HVAC contractor for the Wall Township Board of Education. A proud union tradesman, Dave brought skill, dedication, and craftsmanship to everything he did.
Over the years, Dave made his home in Ohio, Queens, and across New Jersey, where he raised his daughter Alison McComb with his former wife, Valerie Darab. His passions were many-boxing, fishing, photography, and building computers among them. Some of his happiest moments were spent at his beloved marina, a Coors Light in hand, strolling the docks or relaxing with his favorite TV shows: Friends, MASH*, and The Price Is Right.
Dave is survived by his daughter Alison, sister Barbara Exposito, and grandchildren Ava and Roman Sorrento. He was predeceased by his ex-wife Valerie, brother Patrick, and parents David Sr. and Blanche.
A Celebration of Life with military honors will be held on June 21st, with family and friends invited to gather in his memory at the marina he held so dear-the place where he was most at peace, surrounded by friends and the water he loved.
Dave will be remembered as a strong, independent, and quick-witted man who always had a story to tell or a joke to share. A loyal friend, devoted father, and loving grandfather, Dave showed those around him how to live life with purpose and joy. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
"Somewhere, he's got a fishing pole in one hand and a cold Coors Light in the other."
Rest easy, Dad. Love you forever.
