Our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, David Harry McEwen, passed away peacefully in his home on November 21, 2025, surrounded by family who loved him dearly.
David was born on June 15, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Benjamin Harry and Viola McEwen. From a young age, he was known for being mischievous, his sense of adventure, and his determination-traits that stayed with him throughout his life.
As a teenager, David set his heart on the love of his life, Karen Jenkins, and never gave up until she finally agreed to marry him. The two were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 29, 1961, just after David proudly joined the United States Marine Corps. After his service, he attended Weber State University and went on to earn a Master's degree in Biology from the University of Georgia.
David began his career teaching biology at East High School, but his entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to start his own electrical company with his brother. His hard work and dedication built a life that allowed him to spend time with his family.
The McEwen's spent countless days boating and water skiing on Utah Lake, where David's laughter and enthusiasm filled the air. He loved the outdoors-whether snowmobiling through fresh powder, casting a line into a quiet lake, or hunting in the mountains, he found peace in nature and joy in sharing those experiences with his loved ones. When he wasn't exploring the outdoors, you could find him in his garden-planting, watering, or harvesting the fruits of his labor, which he always brought inside for Karen to take care of. The two worked as a team in everything they did, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and good food.
David was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully in many callings, including bishop and Scout leader. His leadership blessed many around him. After retiring early, David and Karen moved to Kidder, Missouri, where he built a beautiful home for the two of them. His love of Church history deepened as he explored and studied the sacred ground where they lived. Together, they served as senior missionaries in the Independence, Missouri Mission, strengthening their faith and forming lifelong friendships.
In his later years, David cherished traveling with family and spending time with his grandchildren. His tender heart grew even deeper after the loss of his beloved son, Daren, in 2021. To honor Daren's memory, David spent his remaining years building a cabin on his property-a labor of love that stands as a testament to his devotion to family.
Among the many things David will be remembered for, his Donald Duck rendition of "Happy Birthday" will forever echo in the hearts of those who loved him. His humor, silliness, service and love will be deeply missed.
David has now joyfully reunited in heaven with his cherished wife Karen, his parents Harry and Vi, his sister Gerry, and his beloved son Daren.
He is survived by his children: Jill (Larry), Cindee (the late Bryce), John, and Tim (Becky); his daughter-in-law Penny; his grandchildren: Tina (Joe), Christopher (Julia), Jacob, Austin, Alyssa (McKay), Steph, Ben, Tosha (Tyler), Salena (Chris), Liz (Jed), Caity, Levi, Karen, Raine, and Evie; and his adored great-grandchildren: Hannah, Emilee, Hunter, Ilee, Alayna, Autumn, Charlie, and Stetsyn.
David's legacy of faith, family, laughter, and love will live on through all who were blessed to know him.
A memorial service for both David and Karen will be held in the spring to honor their memory and celebrate their life together. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to help complete David's cabin-a project he began with love and dedication in remembrance of his son, Daren.
