It is with great sadness that the family of David George McGreevy, 68, of New York City, announces his passing on Monday, September 22nd. David was a longtime New York City educator and devoted collector of vintage photography.

David was born on September 5, 1957, and raised in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from Kapaun Mount Carmel High School in 1975. David went on to attend the University of Kansas where he received a bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts and a graduate degree from the School of Architecture in 1985. After college, he moved to New York City, where he became involved in the arts and theater community, spending time designing stages for local productions.

David went on to serve 25 years as the Visual Arts Teacher at P.S. 116 in Manhattan, where he was admired for inspiring students with his creativity and passion for the arts. During his career there he served as the Art/Lincoln Center Institute Coordinator and the Art/Annenburg Grant Coordinator on behalf of the school. He retired from P.S. 116 in 2017.

In retirement, Mr. McGreevy pursued his interest in collecting vintage photography. His home was filled with 19th-century photographs, which he carefully curated and deeply valued.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Phyllis and Lester McGreevy, and his sisters, Pam Crosby and Laure Potter and brother-in-law Dirk Wright. He is survived by his siblings Tom (Tami) McGreevy, Debbie Wright, Suze (Gary) Freeman, Mark McGreevy, and Brian (Sherryl) McGreevy, brother in-law Doug Potter as well as nine nieces and nephews and twelve great nieces and nephews.

To honor David's wishes, there will be no funeral service. Our family invites you to please celebrate David's life in your own personal or group moments of remembrance.

To continue the work David cared deeply about by supporting a creative and safe environment for students, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to P.S.116 PTA Rainbow Alliance. Donations should be made out to the P.S.116 PTA with a memo for the McGreevy Rainbow Alliance Memorial and sent to P.S.116 PTA at 210 E 33 Street New York, NY 10016. Donations are also accepted on Venmo @PS116PTA with a note that it is for the Rainbow Alliance.
