David Merkel was born on January 12,1938 at Deaconess hospital In Cincinnati, Ohio to Robert and Barbra Merkel. He attended Colerain High school, graduating in 1956. He grew up going to White Oak Christian church, where he met the love of his life, a young lady named Mildred Land. Mildred was from French Lick, Indiana and had come to Cincinnati to attend Cincinnati Bible College. David met Mildred at White Oak and married there on October 17,1959. David worked at Cincinnati Bell after high school before volunteering for the Air Force. He was activated, being sent to Germany. Mildred joined him there, and together, they traveled extensively throughout Europe whenever David was not on duty. Arriving back in the States in 1962, David continued working at Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company. He retired after 40 years of service. After David retired from the telephone company, he enjoyed helping his son on the farm bailing hay and straw. In 1964, David and Mildred had the birth of their son, Robert Merkel. Robert Merkel married Julie West and gave David and Mildred three grand kids Cody, Dustin & Rachel. David attended UC at night in the late 1960's and early 1970's in machine tool operation and electric engineering. David enjoyed going to antique farm machine shows and was a lifetime member at Tri State Gas Engine Association. Dave and Mildred, along with their son, traveled all throughout the 48 continental United States. They also visited Hawaii. Later in life, David and Mildred continued to travel going to the Holy Land and went on many European river boat cruises. David and Mildred traveled very late into their lives up to their 80's. David liked to design houses, having built many for Mildred. Their last move was to Mason Chrisian Village in Mason, Ohio, where they lived together until Mildred required more care than David could supply. Mildred moved across the lake from their house into assisted living, where David would come every day to be with her. He moved in with Mildred in the assisted living to be with Mildred once again. Mildred left David on April 26, 2024, and he continued until Wednesday September 24, 2025 he left us to be reunited with Mildred once again in the great beyond.
