David Mitchell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Woodlawn Funeral Home & Garden of Memories on Dec. 17, 2025.
Born July 31, 1932 – Returned to the Beyond December 11, 2025 "The Porchlight That Never Went Out"
David Lee Mitchell-known lovingly to his family as Popo-passed peacefully from this world into the next on December 11, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on July 31, 1932, David was a man of quiet strength, quick wit, and a heart that held multitudes.
He lived a life not of spectacle, but of steadfastness. The kind of man who showed up-rain or shine, heartbreak or joy-offering a steady hand, a wise word, or simply a comfortable silence on a warm Texas porch. He believed in black coffee, doing things right the first time, and the power of simply being there.
David loved deeply and without pretense. His love was felt most clearly in the small, enduring ways: a pat on the back, a proud smile, a story told a hundred times but never tired. He raised generations with grace, humor, and dignity-leaving behind not just memories, but echoes of who he was in the souls of those who carry his legacy.
He now joins his beloved wife, Lucille Cotrone Mitchell, in the garden beyond the veil-a place their granddaughter calls Everplace, where porch swings sway forever and great-grandchildren are held in arms of stardust.
David Lee Mitchell is preceded in death by his wife Lucille Cotrone Mitchell, daughter Deborah Lawson, parents Elmer and Nellie Mae Mitchell, son-in-law Lloyd Arnold, and the tragic death of his 8-year-old great-granddaughter Penelope Richard on Good Friday April 18, 2025.
His living relatives two children, daughter Anita Arnold, and son David Alan Mitchell, and wife, Melissa, along with son-in-law Jim Lawson; and grandchildren Luna McCormick aka Brittany and husband Michael, Kaitlyn Arnold, James Lawson, Stephanie Lawson Howell and husband Brian, and Hayley Mitchell; three great grandchildren, Daniel Richard, Lainey Head, and Alena Howell. He is survived by family who will miss him profoundly, including those still finding the words. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved him with a depth beyond language and will forever hold his name in light.
To those who knew him: remember his laughter. To those who carry his blood: walk tall, and walk kind. And to Popo: we will find you again, in every breeze that feels like home.
