David Lee Mossbarger, 78, of Frankfort, died Thursday, April 4, 2024 following an extended illness. His loving wife of 56 years was at his side. He was born Monday, December 10, 1945, in Ross County, the son of the late Dane R. and Lena L. Ransdell Mossbarger. On June 23, 1967, he married the former Joan E. Carter, who survives.
In addition to his wife, David is survived by two sons, Jeffrey (Renee) Mossbarger of Stuttgart, Germany, Steven (Gretchen) Mossbarger of Washington Court House, two grandchildren, Alex and Logan Mossbarger, two great-granddaughters, and one sister, Diane (Wayne) Hawley of Radnor OH.
David was a 1963 graduate of Frankfort High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University, and his master’s degree from Wichita State University. David's love of music was extensive. He was a 4-year member of The Ohio State University Marching Band, where he played sousaphone. Additionally, he performed in both The Ohio State University Concert Band and The Ohio State University Athletic Band for 4 years. David received a fellowship at Wichita State University where he was the marching band director, concert band director, basketball band director, and a lower brass instructor. David taught music at Adena Local Schools and Chillicothe City Schools for almost 40 years. His tenure at each saw the bands’ performance, reputations, and awards earned rise to all-time highs. He received the Adena Teacher of the Year Award in 1975, served as a Past President of the Ohio Music Education Association District 16, directed the Great Seal of Ohio Band for more than 20 years, and played in the Fayette County Community Band.
A funeral service for David will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2024, in the EBRIGHT FUNERAL HOME, Frankfort. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort. Friends, family, and former students are invited to visit with David's family during calling hours at the Adena High School on Thursday, April 11, 2024, from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Great Seal of Ohio Band, c/o John Huffman, 1778 Prussia Rd., Waverly, OH 45690 or the Concord Township EMS, PO Box 616, Frankfort OH 45628.
