Dr. David LeRoy Newquist died Sunday, November 2, 2025, at Avera St. Lukes Hospital in Aberdeen, SD.
A private family burial will be held.
David LeRoy Newquist was born on September 25, 1934 in Moline, Illinois to Carl and Alice (Johnson) Newquist.
He graduated from Augustana in Rock Island and went on to get his Masters and PHD in philosophy from the University of Iowa. He was very active in writing a blog for the Northern Valley Beacon. He served in the Army and was stationed in Germany from 1958-1960. He was also very active in the Democratic Party.
David was very proud working as the farm and business editor at Moline Dispatch for four years. He then went on to teach at the Augustana College for eight years (1968-1976) as a Professor of English. Following this career; he arrived at his true calling; working as a Professor of English and Journalism for Northern State University for 20 wonderful years (1979-1999). Here he taught a writing American literature course, specialized in Native American literature, was a publications advisor, and President of the Faculty Union at both the local and state levels.
David married Virginia Newquist on April 25, 1987 and together they spent 38 loving years enjoying each others company.
Grateful for having shared David's life are his wife, Virginia Snyder Newquist of Aberdeen, children, Leslie (Brian Peterson) Newquist of Colorado, Andrian Newquist of Aberdeen and David Newquist of Aberdeen, grandchildren, Kace, Julian, Kaiden, Desmond, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Preceding David in death are his parents and two brothers, Edson and Ted.
