David Charles O'Brien, 78, of
Magnolia, Delaware, passed away at his home on February 11, 2026, after a long illness.
Born September 25, 1947, in
Elizabeth, New Jersey, he was the son of the late John O'Brien and Ethel O'Brien (nee Wintage). He grew up alongside his sister, Judith H. O'Brien.
After graduating from Linden High School in 1966, Dave proudly served in the United States Navy. During his service, he traveled to many foreign ports aboard the USS Lloyd Thomas (DD-764) and the USS Wasp (CVS-18). He was honorably discharged in 1968 and remained proud of his military service throughout his life. Dave was a dedicated member of American Legion Post 7 in Harrington, Delaware, where he enjoyed reminiscing with fellow veterans about their time in the service.
Shortly after returning home, Dave married his beloved girlfriend, Mary Decowski. They shared 57 wonderful years of marriage and were blessed with two sons, Kevin and Scott. Dave built a successful career as a computer technician, parts supervisor and logistics manager for Sperry Univac and Unisys. After retiring from Unisys, he worked as a bartender, where his friendly nature and gift for conversation made him many lifelong friends.
An avid golfer, Dave belonged to several men's golf groups over the years, including Peddie, Forsgate, Skyview, Princeton Meadows, Timber Greens, and Harbor Isles. He was especially proud of achieving two holes-in-one. He was a one-of-a-kind man and anyone who knew him will tell you that you never really wondered what he was thinking or what his opinions were on any given topic – especially politics. He was always sure to make his thoughts known, even if you didn't ask. You'd also know he loved his bourbon. His cremains will be placed in a custom Jim Beam barrel urn, a fitting reflection of one of his simple pleasures.
He was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, suffering for many years before enjoying recent success with two Super Bowl wins. He enjoyed attending their first Super Bowl parade in 2018 with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Kevin, and his granddaughter, Isabella.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary E. O'Brien; his son, Scott and daughter-in-law, Linda; his grandson, Nicolas O'Brien; his sister, Judith Buckney; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Stan and Jan Decowski; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP),
