It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, David R. O'Brien, of Bradenton, FL. He passed away on January 12, 2024, at the age of 77. David battled two types of cancer over the past five years, during which he fought bravely and with grace.
David was born in Portland, ME, on December 13, 1946, to Robert F. and Emilda Eliason O'Brien. He was an inveterate Mainer, complete with the requisite accent and Boston sports caps, love of fly fishing and being a lifelong Mr. Fix-it, plus endless stories of sock hops, oldies, and the Maine woods, where he loved to snowmobile.
David graduated from Windham, ME, High School and worked for many years of his life in the electrical utility industry. The O'Briens lived in Hampstead, NH, for 30 years, during which David was a devoted Lifetime Member of the Hampstead Civic Club, which provided several organized sports teams and leagues for the young kids in the town. David was a coach and "commissioner" for many in softball and basketball and enthusiastically enjoyed his years helping kids to learn about and love sports. He also played sports in Men's Leagues with his Civic Club friends.
Upon retiring to Bradenton, David and his wife of 43 years, Karen, became immersed in tennis at Lakewood Ranch and Del Webb and made many great friends. David was an amazing man, so giving of his time and caring spirit. There are many stories of him helping others out, unasked, and brightening the day of people he would just engage in conversation while walking, shopping, or even traveling near or far.
David is survived by Karen and their daughter, Katie O'Brien, son-in-law, David Holstein, and grandson Julian, as well as several cousins and nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
A private Celebration of Life for our beloved David will be held at Del Webb LWR in March, by invitation of the family. Donations in David's name may be made to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Tunnel To Towers Foundation, and the American Diabetes Association. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 26th Street Chapel, 5624 26th Street West, Bradenton, FL 34207, is in charge of arrangements.
