David P. Burridge Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
When David P. Burridge was a high school freshman, a fellow student was diagnosed with leukemia and a fund-raising drive was held. What happened next shocked even Burridge''s friends. "David brought his entire paycheck, and endorsed it over to us," said Debbie Hargrave, an English teacher at Lafayette High School. "That was on Friday. The next Monday, he brought us his entire allowance for the month." Burridge, 19, of Lafayette, La., died Sept. 6 when his vehicle was attacked north of Fallujah. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton. Burridge graduated in 2003 and joined the Marines in January. Janine Neck, a teacher in the gifted program at the school, remembers Burridge approaching her with a mission. "He came to me, because his goal was to learn how to read better," she said. "He set the goal and he achieved it. That''s the kind of person David was." He is survived by his parents, George and Yvette. "They only make a few special kids and he was one," said his father. "He was always a good kid, the kind you wish, in the world, that he would be here a long, long time."

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

To David,
My name is maura mccabe im a senior in high school from new york and in my sociology class we have been discussing the subject of war and about the veterans, family members who have lost their loved ones and a assignment we are doing is to pick a picture from my teacher's wall that he has up of thousands of faces of those who have fallen in war, and i chose yours. i just wanted to let you and your family and friends know that you are not forgotten, and i thank you for the sacrifice you have made and to your family, "without a witness, they just disappear." -Taking Chance. i am your witness and i will tell your story. RIP David Burridge.

To my love,
I cannot believe it has been 7 years. I miss you more and more everyday. I am continually thankful for the time we had. I owe you my life in more ways then one you taught me how to love and how to be loved. You are not the love of my life but you are and always will be my solemate. I hurt everyday that a part of me is gone. It is still hard for me to imagine my life without you and sometimes I still pick up the phone to call you. I love you more then I did yesterday and I will love you FPR the rest of my life and beyond. Thank you are never leaving me. I love you booboo!

Seven years today for seven sets of family and friends, and only a few days from the tenth anniversary of 9/11; that day that changed all our lives forever. Ten years ago last week or so, I was at Camp Pendleton watching my young 2/1 Marine graduate from boot camp, with pride that he had made it through the tough thirteen weeks. Didn't have a thought of what was to come; that the six hundred new young Marines I watched on parade would be a number soon surpassed in military losses. Some of these seven young men we remember today likely joined after 9/11, willing to make the ultimate wartime sacrifice if they were called, as we now know they were. The years pass, but it still seems like yesterday to me, so I can not imagine what it is like for the families. But we remember and I'm proud to call their names from memory, with a thought as well to the brave Iraqi interpreters who died with them on September 6th, 2004.
Michael Allred, Mick(Nygard-)Bekowsky, David Burridge, Derek Gardner, Quinn Keith, Joseph McCarthy, and Lamont Wilson. We have searched them each out and brought them to life in our hearts. Gratitude, prayers and blessings to each family member and friend.

I have shared this story with the teen boys I work with, most of whom will not be eligble for the military, and encouraged them to seek out a fallen soldier to carry in their hearts as one inspiration for serving others with their own lives.

So long and yet it seems like yesterday. These seven Marines and their loved ones from that dark September 6th have been in my mind all month and particularly over Labor Day weekend. It was a trip back in time to my hometown, complete with fair and patriotic rodeo grand entry with a tribute to those who served. New to me was the sold out concert the night before, and everyone was talking about how the entertainer had sung a patriotic theme and then brought a group of Marines in dress blues up on stage to receive a large toys for tots contribution. The crowd gave the Marines a standing ovation and wouldn’t sit down. It was a good feeling to know that across the country similar celebrations of gratitude were happening. And despite the thrill of dress blues, we all know it’s the hot sweaty dirty guys out in the grit and sand in digital camos and desert boots that we are cheering for.
Then I came home and opened the e-mail forward with the u-tube video showing the signal motion for gratitude to our service men and women; hand over heart down to open hand, so natural and unobtrusive. Bless who ever came up with it.
So we remember these sons and their families and friends with gratitude and honor once again.
May God Bless You All, heart to hand.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

I can't even find the words...I lost my 19 year old son--5 Sept 2007, Balad, Iraq. I am absolutely devastated and I know that you are too...but find comfort in the fact that we will see our loved ones, our heroes again. Do I wish that I could trade places with my son? ABSOLUTELY not. He is in the arms of our Lord--"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. Father we entrust our brother David to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold David in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

I slipped on my dog tags bearing the name of David as I do every morning. I counted down the days until the 6th. A day that will always be in my memory. What a great sacrifice for our freedoms. Yvette, this is far from over. David will not be forgotten. You are in our prayers.

I am thinking of you all today. I know this is a particularly difficult day for you. I hope there is some comfort in knowing that there are people, even those whom you have not met, who hold the memory of David in their hearts and also hold you in their prayers.

I can not sleep, even though it’s been a wonderful evening. Candlelight yard and great friends, great music and all my small world is well, and at peace. Yet, the names go through my mind and faces and smiles and the national news on that fateful Labor Day morning. Michael Allred, Mick Bekowsky, David Burridge, Derek Gardener, Quinn Keith, Joe McCarthy, Lamont Wilson, God Bless your families and friends, and know you all are not alone, we remember, and these lost sons bring meaning and purpose to life well lived, knowing that life is a privilege. And yes, the Iraqi interpreters whose names we have never heard, we remember you.

I feel thankful that I had the opportunity to meet David briefly before he left for Iraq. He spoke of how proud he was to be a Marine, how he wanted to be part of the mission in Iraq, the girl he was leaving behind that he planned to marry someday. He was a wonderful young man, who seemed grounded, had direction in his life and goals he wanted to achieve. I never thought when he left my home that day that I would never see him again.. I have thought of him so many times since and will continue to. I thank David...

Thank you for your willingness to defend the United States of America and all that we hold sacred. Though tears can never bring you back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that you made and our sorrow at your passing. You are truly a hero and your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Your mission on earth is complete. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the heroes who have passed before.

It feels as if David has been a part of my life these past 2 1/2 years--even though I never met him. I know my son misses him. I will be praying for him, the others killed that day, and for your family when I go to Memorial Day services. I cannot forget David's sacrifice. I honor him for what he has done for all of us.

It will be Easter in 2 days. I feel compelled to post some words of gratitude, but struggle for the correct words that would express my appreciation adequately, but know that my son serves in the Corps. May your family and friends surround you with love and pleasant memories of your David this Easter.
