Obituary for David Paterson June 3, 1943 – May 10, 2025
David Charles Paterson, 81, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and retired law enforcement officer, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. His life was defined by service, loyalty, and joy-filled with unforgettable moments and deep connections that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Dave grew up in Huntsburg, Ohio, and graduated from Cardinal High School, where he was a standout athlete. An accomplished pitcher, he attracted attention from scouts with the New York Yankees, before signing with the Chicago White Sox. His professional baseball career was short lived due to being drafted and inducted into the U.S. Army on January 7, 1965, where he served as a Military Police officer in Germany. That experience laid the foundation for a distinguished 30-year career in law enforcement. He served the Willoughby Hills Police Department with honor and integrity, rising through the ranks to become Sergeant, Detective and Lieutenant. Throughout his career, he was admired for his leadership, his calm under pressure, and dedication to justice. He also competed in numerous pistol and police shooting competitions, earning respect for his exceptional marksmanship. Upon retiring from Willoughby Hills PD, Dave spent 15 years working part-time for the Lake Metroparks Ranger Department.
Dave embraced life with energy and passion. A car enthusiast, he had a special love for his Pontiac Trans Am's. He was a VIP at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, where he visited at least twice a year. In his later years, he enjoyed going to MGM in Northfield, Ohio and visiting local wineries with friends and family. Yet some of his favorite moments were right at home-cooking elaborate meals for his family and enjoying cocktails together on the patio.
Dave was a loyal fan of the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians, cheering on his hometown teams through every season. More than anything, Dave's greatest joy came from spending time with family. Dave was so proud of his sons for following in his footsteps into law enforcement careers.
He was the beloved husband to Kimberly (nee Wagner) Paterson; loving father of Cheryl Paterson, Patrick (Cherie) Paterson and Paul (Margarita) Paterson; and cherished grandfather of Ashley and Lauren Paterson and Elias and Georgia Paterson.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, David M. and Irene (nee Breski) Paterson; and his sister, Suzanne Sobie.
Dave shared 48 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Kim, whose love and companionship were the center of his life. Whether they were traveling to Las Vegas or hosting family gatherings, Kim and Dave cherished every moment they spent together.
Dave will be remembered for his steady presence, charm and quick-witted sense of humor, his strong moral compass, and deep devotion to those he loved. His legacy lives on in the stories, laughter, and strength of the family and community he served so faithfully.
The funeral services are private. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave's name may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110 or Rescue Village, 15463 Chillicothe Rd., Novelty, OH 44072.
Arrangements are entrusted to McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Homes in Willoughby and Mentor.
