Obituary published on Legacy.com by George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home (Southside) - Jacksonville on Feb. 25, 2026.
David V. Penland Sr., 84, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, at his home in
Jacksonville, Florida, surrounded by his beloved family.
Dave was born on March 10, 1941, in
Charleston, South Carolina, to his late parents, Boyd Penland and Frances Penland (Ebbs). In his early years, he moved from South Carolina to Oklahoma before eventually settling in
Jacksonville, Florida, where he built his life, raised his family, and established his legacy.
He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps directly out of high school, where he played football as a nose tackle. His love of football continued as he later coached high school football at University Christian School in Jacksonville from the 1980s through the 2000s, mentoring young athletes and leaving a lasting impact on many.
Following high school, Dave began driving trucks for Coca-Cola. In 1972, he incorporated Cypress Truck Lines, growing the company through his vision, grit, and leadership. He expanded his business further by purchasing Ploof Truck Lines in 1999 and Sunbelt Transport in 2009. Dave was a savvy businessman whose work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit built a legacy that will endure for generations.
Above all else, Dave loved the Lord, his church - University Church - his family, and his country. His most common expression, "Lord have mercy," reflected both his humility and his deep faith. He was a good man who cherished life and those around him, worked until the day he passed, and leaves behind an incredible legacy. He especially loved to eat anything fried and never passed up Nanny's spaghetti - one of his favorite simple joys, lovingly made by his wife.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, the late Tim Roy Penland, and Tim's wife, Joann.
He is survived by his devoted wife of more than 64 years, Cynthia Penland (née White); his four sons, David Penland Jr. (Debbie), Thad Penland (Tammy), Matthew Penland (Montina), and Aaron Penland (Brooke); and the beautiful life he and Cynthia created together.
He is also survived by his sixteen grandchildren: David Penland III (Ciara), Lyndsey Hamblen (Clay), Rachel Dillow (Jesse), Dakota Penland, Mikal Penland, Luke Penland, Sarah Penland, Peyton Penland, Olivia Penland, Ressa Penland, Naomi Penland, Cynthia Penland, Mackenzie Luce (Denver), Blayze Padgett, River Penland, and Roman Penland; as well as fourteen great-grandchildren.
Dave is further survived by his sister, Carol Drummond (Danny), and his brother, Rodney Penland (Marilyn).
Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 27, 2026 at University Church from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, where military honors will be rendered. Dave will ultimately be laid to rest at sea.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the University Church Scholarship Fund or to Gideons International.
Arrangements are under the care of Moloney-Hewell Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd. S.,
