David Potter, 80, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family. He was the loving Husband of Mary (Polka) Potter for 58 years.
David was born on August 11, 1944 in New Britain Connecticut to the late Walter Potter and Helen (Schrump) Farr.
David graduated from Southington High School in 1963 and went on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Education from the Central Connecticut State University in 1967.
David began his career as a Teacher and went on to work for many fulfilling years at Chaplin High School, Northeast School in Bristol, and St Thomas in New Britain. His diverse career path included forays into Life Insurance Sales, Independent Carpentry Contracting, and Property Management. The culmination of his teaching career included opportunities to teach English as a Professor at both Briarwood College and Middlesex Community Colleges from which he shared many stories of helping young students succeed.
His interests included many different areas ranging from beer making to walking. One unique interest was Maple Sugaring. His home on Marion Avenue supported many huge maple trees which he tapped for multiple seasons each March. Some years yielded a bounty of several gallons of pure maple syrup. Unfortunately, some family members still preferred Mrs. Butterworths. Another unique hobby was correcting Grammar. This was especially helpful to his grandchildren although sometimes a tad bit bothersome. Other interests included B&B operation, carpentry, cooking, gardening, dog-sitting, reading, and enjoying classical music.
Perhaps his favorite hobby was spending time with his wife and family. His final years were filled with constant commotion and joy emanating from his daughter's house where he and Mary lived.
David is survived by his loving wife Mary, son Jonathan and daughter in law Melissa, son Jeffrey, daughter Kathryn and son in law Saint Steven, and daughter in Law Dorothy. He is cherished and missed immensely by his grandchildren Molly, Bailey, Ava, Nina, Maxwell, Olivia, Natalie, and Jeffrey. David was predeceased by his granddaughter Sophia Minnie.
David's message to the world was to be kind.
Visitation will be held on Sunday January 19th from Noon to 2PM followed by a brief service at the Bailey Funeral home located at 48 Broad Street Plainville, CT. Burial will be private.
Memorial donations can be made in David's name to the Southington Bread for Life

I´ve never met David, but I am quite certain he was very much as special as Mary. Thinking and praying for the family at this time.

Mary & I were going on an overnight work trip and David (who I´d just met) told me to "take care of his lovely bride". There are many many other memories of dinners and visits. My husband loved when Mary & David would visit us in SC as David would get in his B&B mode & take over breakfast and then go for his walks & get lost (just the once).

I am so sorry for everyone's loss.. I will always remember Dave teaching myself how to make maple syrup. And of coarse the fab six having 4 o'clock happy hour, followed by a lovely dinner, lots of laughs...
