David Martin Rilling, a beloved and wonderfully eccentric grandpa with a truly huge heart, passed away peacefully on July 10th at the age of 71.
Known affectionately by his family as "The Machine," David was a man who simply couldn't be persuaded to sit still. His boundless energy was legendary, often channeled into constant home improvement projects and digging holes, much to his family's loving exasperation as the yard frequently resembled a construction zone. Many will fondly recall their childhood punishment of filling buckets of gravel and dirt from his latest yard endeavors-a testament to his industrious spirit and an eccentric family tradition that created lasting memories. A true connoisseur of all things practical, David's favorite items included screws, saws, and hammers, always ready for his next big undertaking. Perhaps less practically, but equally indicative of his unique tastes, he also had a great fondness for exotic mustard.
Beyond his tireless work ethic, David's heart knew no bounds. A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his compassion extended far beyond his immediate family. With his late wife, Cynthia, he opened their home and their hearts to foster many children, providing love, stability, and nurture to those in need of a home. Their profound generosity touched countless lives, reflecting a deep commitment to service and an unwavering belief in family, in all its forms. David also proudly boasted-and his family can confirm, with a chuckle-that he could speak six different languages.
Professionally, David dedicated over 30 years as an engineer specializing in construction management, a career that undoubtedly benefited from his meticulous nature and unstoppable drive.
David is survived by his loving daughters, Erika, Paula, and Mary Jo, and his stepsons, Daniel and Matthew. He also leaves behind a multitude of cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cynthia.
David's legacy is one of unwavering devotion to family, a unique blend of eccentric charm, and a heart large enough to embrace and uplift many. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral service and celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM at 3649 West 4800 South, Roy, Utah 84067.
