It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of David G. Rothschild, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. David passed away Wednesday, March 12th in the house we have called our home for the past 42 years, embraced in the love of his family.
David was born April 5th, 1946 in Springfield, MA, the son of Nelly and Siegbert Rothschild and brother to Michael Rothschild. He was a graduate of Springfield Technical High School and Western New England College (Undergraduate of Engineering and an MBA). As a boy David enjoyed spending time in Forest Park, biking around Springfield, ice skating, sledding, baseball, swimming, tennis, and spending time with neighborhood friends and cousins.
David met his wife Kathy in 1972 when they worked together at Combustion Engineering. They shared smiles and conversations that kick started their love story. The two married June 23, 1974 and sealed it with a slow dance to "Just You and Me" by the band Chicago. They shared a common love of adventure and traveled the world over the years. In 1977 they welcomed their first son, Benjamin. In 1979, their second son, Daniel, was born. And they rounded out the family with a daughter, Amy in 1982.
David shared his interests and hobbies with his family including his love for the great outdoors on countless camping trips, beach trips to Cape Cod, Old Lyme, and Rhode Island, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, a love for live music, biking, golfing, walking, hiking, vintage car shows, art, reading, skiing, and a good playground romp.
When David retired after 37 years of working for Combustion Engineering/Alstom Power, he and Kathy searched long and hard for their place in the sun and found that in Sarasota FL. With his newfound time and passion for helping others, David became an enthusiastic supporter of the local Red Cross of Springfield MA as a trained disaster volunteer for 14 years. He also dedicated 12 years to Habitat for Humanity in Sarasota, FL.
David is survived by the love of his life Kathleen Rothschild, three children, Benjamin Rothschild and his wife Michelle of New Berlin, WI, Daniel Rothschild and wife Erin Markakis of Flemington, NJ, Amy Ferrigno and husband Michael of East Longmeadow, MA, six grandchildren, Abbigail, Tesla, Aaron, Jacob, Eleanor, and Alice, his brother Michael Rothschild and wife Judy of Santa Barbara, CA, along with many nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends who all held a special place in his heart.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, best Pops ever, the proudest Opa of his "little people", best friend, and a man who loved a real good hug.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, March 23rd at 11:30am in the Longmeadow Cemetery, 34 Williams Street, Longmeadow MA.
