David Howard “Dave” Russell of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, at 63 years old after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on February 19, 1962, in Goldsboro, North Carolina to Ronald Clay and Jean (Quinn) Russell. Dave moved to Indianapolis as a teenager and graduated from Decatur Central High School where he exceeded in sports, especially football, baseball and wrestling. Dave worked most of his life in the automotive industry as a diesel and trailer mechanic and an over-the-road truck driver. He had various interests and a love for being on the water, especially the ocean. He loved to be outdoors and having his family and friends over for barbeques and to watch NASCAR racing. He was an accomplished dart player and a mean electronic bowling player. He also enjoyed a day out on the golf course. Most of all he loved spending time with his family. Dave had a passion for and was a very dedicated member of the Sons of the American Legion Post #64 where he was a 30+ year member. He held many offices of leadership there and was a dedicated volunteer. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post #908. He was loved and will be dearly missed by many. Dave is survived by his loving wife, Barbara M. (Smith) Russell, his children, Brent (Stephanie) Russell, Courtney Russell, Candice (Sam) Sanders, his stepdaughter, Amanda Smith, his grandchildren, Madison, Peyton, Hayden, Journey, Paisleigh, Priscilla, his mother, Jean Russell, and his stepsister, Cindy (Duane) Wynn. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald C. Russell and his sister, Sheila Davis. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 9, 2025, from 4:00pm-7:00pm at Flanner Buchanan Decatur Township with the funeral service immediately following at 7:00pm. Flanner Buchanan is entrusted with his cremation arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial gifts may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society. The family invites you to celebrate his life with them at the American Legion Post #64 601 S. Holt Road Indianapolis, Indiana 46241 on Sunday, June 29, 2025, from 2:00pm-6:00pm in the Banquet Room.
