George Hommel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carlisle-Branson Funeral Service & Crematory on Mar. 2, 2026.
George Hommel III, 72, of Mooresville, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026, at his home. Born on June 1, 1953, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Herc, as many lovingly knew him, spent his life dedicating his time and talents to his family and his work.

Herc graduated from Decatur Central High School with the class of 1971. As a construction superintendent, Herc was known for his unwavering work ethic and exceptional skills. Throughout his career, he was often called in to bring projects back on track, a testament to his adept leadership and expertise. His craftsmanship as a carpenter set him apart, earning the respect of colleagues and clients alike. He retired from Patterson Horth of Indianapolis. One of the jobs he was most proud of was his work at Union Station in Indianapolis.

Beyond his professional life, Herc embraced the joys of family and hobbies. He cherished his role as a husband to Lemmie (Catellier) Hommel. The two were united in marriage on April 8, 1972.
Herc found immense pleasure in watching his grandchildren participate in their various sporting events, always cheering them on with pride and enthusiasm. He was also a lover of the outdoors, finding solace in gardening and the simple joys it brought.

An avid fan of classic westerns, Herc enjoyed watching movies and tv shows featuring icons like John Wayne and Chuck Connors. He possessed a spirit of adventure that took him on countless car rides with Lemmie, often on the hunt for the perfect restaurant for dinner-a journey that became a cherished tradition for the couple. He also enjoyed riding and breaking horses.

He will be deeply missed by many including his wife, Lemmie Hommel of Mooresville; son, Jason (wife, Melinda) Hommel of Avon; daughter, Shannon (husband, Brian) Chambers of Camby; former son-in-law, George (wife, Alma) Samuels of Greenwood; grandchildren, Levi Samuels, Alex Hommel, Dylan Hommel, Noah Summers, and Brady Chambers; and great grandchild, Koraline Samuels.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Hommel Jr.

Herc was a loved member of the Hommel family . He always as a young man loved breaking and riding horses. I remember him participating on the wrestling team and going to watch his matches. (He always won) He was always the cousin everyone looked up to. He was larger than life and had a heart of gold. Rest in peace Herk until I see you again. Love Marsha
