Born August 18, 1941, in Benham, Indiana, to LeRoy and Mary Gladys Tingle Hunteman, Roy lived most of his life in this community. He graduated from Decatur Central High School in Indianapolis in 1959. Roy graduated in 1963 from DePauw, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was also a Rector Scholar to DePauw. Roy graduated in 1967 from the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he was named to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received the Dr. Mary Jean Yoder Award. Roy spent a quarter of his senior year on a Smith, Kline, French Fellowship to Creighton-Freeman Christian Hospital in India. 1967 continued to be a big year for Roy, as he married Mary Kaye Wright. He completed a rotating internship at Marion County General Hospital from 1967 to 1968. From 1968 to 1969, Roy served as a field surgeon in Vietnam with a rank of Captain in the 9th Infantry Corps. In 1969, he received the Vietnam Service Award, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf cluster and the Army Commendation Medal with V Device.
From 1970 to 1971, Roy did an internal medicine residency at the Indiana School of Medicine. From 1971 to 1972, he completed a family practice residency at St. Vincent Hospital, where he was the first resident to graduate from the program and pass the National Family Practice Boards. From 1972 to 1977, Roy served a home mission assignment for the United Methodist Church to the Sea Island Comprehensive Health Care Corporation in three island clinics serving the underserved and underrepresented individuals off the coast of
Charleston, SC. Roy then practiced family medicine in Richmond from 1977 to 1994. He was one of the co-founders of Friends of the Battered for Women and Children, which was the precursor of the Genesis Shelter for Women. He also assisted others in establishing the WIC program in Richmond.
From 1985 to 1991, he was Sixth District director for the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians and in 1992, served a term as president of the Wayne-Union County Medical Society. In December 1994, Roy suffered a devastating stroke that left him paralyzed on his left side. While the stroke ended his medical practice, it did not prevent him from continuing to serve his community. He was able to become a volunteer at the Boys & Girls Club of Wayne County's Central unit. He received the Indiana Academy of Family Medicine's Distinguished Public Service Award in 2000. Roy taught anatomy and physiology at Ivy Tech Community College from 2003 to 2004.
In 2005, Roy received a Meritorious Certificate for participating in the Veterans History Project in Recognition of Supreme Dedication to the United States of America from the Library of Congress and United States Sen. Richard C. Lugar. Roy served as a member of the Petra Board of Richmond and was excited to be involved, with fellow board members, in developing the Siloam Free Clinic.
Roy was a member of Central United Methodist Church. In his spare time, he was an avid bicyclist and raced in DePauw's Little 5 bicycle race.
