Pastor David Leon Russell Sr., age 68, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025. Born on December 20, 1956, in Nashville, he was a distinguished graduate of McGavock High School (Class of 1975).
Called to the ministry later in life, Pastor Russell furthered his theological education at House of Faith Evangelism School under Pastor Ronnie Simmons and graduated on June 1, 2002. As a natural leader, he guided countless individuals both inside and outside the church. He served faithfully as the pastor of the New Testament Church of God until his passing. He is known throughout the community not only for his caring spirit and compassion, but also for the unwavering guidance and leadership he provided.
Dedicated to serving the Lord, Pastor Russell worked tirelessly through prison ministry, teaching, and community outreach. He enthusiastically mentored and led many, always ready to help others however he could.
A proud former athlete, Pastor Russell loved basketball and football. His year career with the Metro Board of Education and his craftsmanship as a mason-priding himself on beautiful and enduring work-underscored his commitment, leadership, and hard work.
He married Sonya Russell on December 17, 2005, and they shared 20 years of love and partnership. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sonya, his brother James (Cheryl) Russell, and sisters Nancy Givens, Wanda (Eugene) Smith and Katrina Russell. He was a devoted father to Natasha (Aldric) Condrey, David (Kushana) Russell Jr., Christopher (Kamisha) Russell, and Kimberly (Kevin) Luke. Bonus father to Gerard Thorpe and Tarchelle (Damon) Bryant. He leaves behind a devoted uncle, Claude P. Grant Sr., and a loving host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends whose lives he touched as a mentor and guide.

Pastor Russell was predeceased by his mother, Rosie Ella Peoples, his father, James Henry Russell, and his late wife, Larita Faye Russell.
