David E. Salogar
Bay City, MichiganOur beloved husband, father, brother, and "Grandpa Dave" to everyone he knew, died Monday, November 25, 2024, at his home with his family at his side, age 76.
David graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1966 and went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Saginaw Valley State University.
A proud US Army veteran, David served during the Vietnam War with B Troop 2/17 Cavalry, 101st Airborne Division, and was honored with two Bronze Stars for his bravery and dedication.
David's professional career spanned several roles in the trucking industry, including dispatcher, terminal manager, and safety and compliance officer. His commitment to helping others was evident in his work as a Peer Support Specialist at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw, where he supported homeless veterans. He also dedicated his time to jail ministry and street homeless outreach.
A devout member of Our Lady of Peace Parish-St. Mary's Church, David served on the Parish Council, as a Eucharistic minister, and as a lector. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council #414 and Bishop Murphy Assembly #0491.
David was a passionate supporter of local sports, holding season tickets for the Saginaw Spirit and serving on the Board of Directors for the Greater Saginaw Amateur Hockey Association. He coached and managed his children's and grandchildren's hockey teams and coached for Central Michigan University's Club Team and Nouvel Catholic Central High School. Additionally, he volunteered with Southwest Little League and served on its board.
David married the love of his life, Barbara A. Stepanski, on January 31, 1970. Barbara survives him, along with their two sons Matthew (Amy Guzman) Salogar and Luke (Emily Dewey-Salogar) Salogar, grandchildren: Isis, Angelie, Magdalena, Juan Pablo, Gabriela, and Atticus, three brothers: Mark, Bryan (Donna), and Dan (Antoinette Super) Salogar, and many nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by his parents Francis and Rita (McDonald) Salogar and two sisters-in-law Joan Salogar and Marcia Stepanski.
David's legacy of service, love, and dedication to his family and community will be remembered and cherished by all who know him. In honor of David's love for hockey, please wear your favorite hockey jersey to the funeral home and/or church. The family would love to see David's spirit live on.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, November 29, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Peace Parish-St. Mary's Church, 607 E. South Union Street,
Bay City, MI 48706. Due to renovations in the main sanctuary of the church the Mass will be in St. Patrick's Hall, located in the lower level of the church. There is an elevator to get to the lower level. Family and friends will gather at Squires Funeral Home, 211 N. Henry Street,
Bay City, MI 48706 on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, from 3:00 to 8:00 PM and at church on Friday, November 29, 2024, after 10:00 AM. A Knights of Columbus Bible and Chalice Presentation will be held Wednesday at 5:45 PM at the funeral home, followed immediately by a Parish Vigil Service for David at 6:00 PM.
