David Schafer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anderson Funeral Home - Townsend on Jun. 17, 2024.
David Schafer, a beloved husband, father, brother, and retired engineer, passed away at the age of 67 on June 10th, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Jeanne Pierce, his two children, Katherine Schafer and Jonathan Schafer, sister Dorothy Schafer and husband Craig Spaulding, brother Paul Schafer and wife Laura, aunt Joanne Cameron and Martin, and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward Schafer and Dorothy (Fett) Schafer.
Born in Buffalo in 1956 and raised in Syracuse NY, David grew up exploring, becoming an Eagle Scout and spending summers at Sabattis Scout Reservation. He was also a competitive gymnast, bowler, and musician, playing the trumpet in the local marching band. After earning his degree in Forest Engineering from Syracuse University, he earned his Masters in Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, bringing him to Massachusetts which he called home for the remainder of his life, living briefly on Cape Cod before building a home in Townsend, MA. He worked for over 40 years in environmental engineering, thoroughly enjoying his last 8 years at ARKF Inc. where he worked alongside some of his favorite colleagues. In Townsend, Dave served on the Conservation Commission, and volunteered coaching on the Townsend Youth Soccer Association for his children.
David had a love for the outdoors, whether it was fly fishing, deep sea fishing or camping and exploring national parks on family vacations. He enjoyed traveling and exploring new cultures, scenery, history, and local beers. He also was an avid motorcycle rider and Harley Davidson fan. He enjoyed the open road so much that he rode a tiny Honda across the country after college and later took his Harley to Sturgis. He loved to travel and be outside with family and friends.
David will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His wit, wisdom, ability to fix almost anything, "horse show dad" antics, and quirky sense of humor touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to call him friend or family.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
A visitation and ceremony of remembrance will be held at Anderson Funeral Home, 250 Main St., Townsend, MA on June 20th, 2024 from 3:00-6:00 PM with the remembrance beginning at 5:00 PM. All who wish to pay their respects are welcome to attend and honor the memory of a remarkable man who will be deeply missed.
