David D. Schakel

David Schakel, 63, of Afton, died February 21, 2026, at his home in Afton. Open memorial visitation with family and receiving friends will be from 2-4 p.m. March 4, 2026, at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Closing words will be preformed by Pastor Shelia Sutton at 3:45 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. In lieu of flowers memorials can be directed to the family. David D. Schakel was born July 26, 1962, in Albia, Ia. to Leonard Clair Schakel and Mary L. (Steele) Schakel. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1980.

On September 14, 1984, he was united in marriage to Gina Jo Tennison in Ottumwa. Where they settled in Ottumwa. Together they were blessed with daughter Mary. They later divorced.

On June 16, 2000, he was united in marriage to Rita Eileen Clark. He lived in Ottumwa later flipped houses and worked at Amoco as a clerk. He moved to North Liberty in 2009 and later to Afton in 2021. They later divorced. He enjoyed collecting antique money and stamps. He also enjoyed playing dice with his family and friends.

Survivors include his daughter Maryl (Eric) Anderson of Afton and two grandchildren, Jeffrea (Cody) Robb of Arispe, and Ericka Anderson of Afton. He is also survived by a sister.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Rick, George, Donnie Schakle and his sisters, Tina Pattie and Cheryl Carnes.
