David Albert Schanuel, age 81, born May 16, 1942 in East St. Louis, Ill., passed away December 15, 2023 at his home in Caseyville, Ill., surrounded by his loving family.
David grew up in East St. Louis and worked as a printer and proofreader for The Daily Record, The Post-Dispatch and The Sporting News. He later worked as a custodian at Washington University until his retirement. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the US Marine Corps from 1964-67. David loved his family and set the bar high for other grandparents, as he was the BEST GRANDPA EVER. He was a devoted husband and dad (aka "Pops"), always quick with a joke.
He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Mabel Dorothy, nee Harwood, Schanuel; siblings Leatrice Schanuel, Virginia Jenkins, Richard Revoire, Verna Mae Schanuel, Charles Schanuel, Theodore Schanuel, Raymond Schanuel, Sandra Schanuel, and Terry Schanuel.
He is survived by his wife Della, nee Puckett, Schanuel whom he married in 1972; his children Beth Ann (Kevin) Sleeter of Fairview Heights, Tracie (Vernon) Ficker of Swansea, and Jason (Regina Feldmann) Schanuel of Caseyville; grandchildren Zachary, Joshua (Marissa) and Sarah (Tyler) Sleeter, Holly, Hannah and Henry Ficker, David, Andrew, and Jacob Schanuel; siblings Kenneth Schanuel, Norman "Buck" Schanuel, Greta Smith, William Schanuel, Doug Schanuel, and Barbara Diane Cannon.
Online condolences may be offered at www.wfh-ofallon.com. Memorial donations are suggested to Colleen Nesbit Memorial Fund. Colleen was a special friend to David's grandson Zachary.
On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, the family will receive friends from 10 am - Noon at Wolfersberger Funeral Home, 102 W. Washington St., O'Fallon, Ill. A Funeral Service will follow, beginning at Noon, with Pastor Bryan Harris officiating, followed by a procession to the graveside committal service with military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
