David Scolnick Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sawyer-Fuller Funeral Home & Cremation Services on May 7, 2025.
David Isadore Scolnick, a loving, faith-filled, and courageous man, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, in Royal Oak, Michigan. Born on October 25, 1927, in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, to Lewis and Mabelle (nee Hetrick) Scolnick, David's early years were marked by his involvement in band and track while graduating from Connellsville High School in 1945.
David's sense of duty led him to join the Marine Corps in 1945, where he served as a Corporal and Low Speed Radio Operator until receiving an honorable discharge in 1948. His pursuit of education took him to Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, for two years and later to the Detroit Institute of Technology. It was at Bob Jones University where he met the love of his life, Jean Marie Licht. They married on September 19, 1953, at Covenant Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, and shared nearly sixty years of devoted marriage until her passing.
David's professional life was distinguished by his exceptional skills as a welder and machine repair specialist. He worked with Superior Welding and Press Repair from 1951 to 1984 and continued to lend his expertise to companies like H&M, Walco, and LaPorte Industries until his retirement. His reputation for excellence in his field led to him being sought after for projects well into his 70s and 80s.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, David was affectionately known as "Poppie." His family meant the world to him, and he is survived by his daughter, Beth Anne Moon, and grandson, Jonathan R. (Melisssa C. Byars-Fiancée) Moon, his sister-in-law Jane Scolnick, his in-law Evelyn Moon, along with many beloved nieces and nephews, Cheryl, Leslie, Tom, Rebekah, David, Deborah, Allison, Catherine, Sarah, Jennifer, Julia, Judi, Janine, Lew, Kathy and Kimberly. David was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Jean Marie Scolnick; son in law the late Randall J. Moon, his brother, Lewis Scolnick; his sisters, Marilyn (Thomas) Feeser, Rebekah (Dr. Barclay) Jones; his brother-in-law, Ernest Licht; his sister-in-law, the late Carol Licht; his niece the late Joyce and his in-law Jesse Moon.
David's faith was the cornerstone of his life. A devout Christian, he was half Jewish and held a special love for the Jewish people. He dedicated himself to sharing his faith, particularly with the Jewish community. His commitment to his church was evident in his service at the Hebrew Christian Church, First Baptist Church of Oak Park, where he served as a Deacon and Choir and Men's Quartet member. In his later years, he attended Farmington Hills Baptist Church and finally, Grace Baptist Church.
David's passions extended beyond his faith and family; he had a deep love for music, photography, and fishing. These interests brought joy to his life and to those around him. His friendships were a testament to his warm and loving nature, with many lifelong friends including the late Mrs. Melba Fillmore and family, The Robert King Family, and many others who held a special place in his heart.
David's legacy is one of love, dedication, and service. His life was a reflection of his beliefs, and through his actions, he touched the lives of many. He leaves behind a family that will forever cherish his memory, and a community that was blessed by his presence.
The funeral service to celebrate David's life will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM, with a time of gathering beginning at 10:00 AM at Grace Baptist Church, 280 E. Lincoln St., Birmingham, MI 48009. He will be laid to rest at Glen Eden Memorial Park in Livonia, Michigan, where he will be joining his beloved wife Jean Marie.

Beth. I am so sorry for your loss. I wish I could come to his service. He certainly was a blessed man with a strong Christian faith. May you find peace at this time and in the days ahead

I am so sorry I cannot come for the funeral arrangements. I have not seen Dave in many years, but I have missed him for many of them. Each year I at Easter I listen to a cantata we did at First Baptist of Oak Park shortly before my family moved away, and I am touched by his solo in the cantata. How blessed you are to have had him around for such a long time!
