It is with great sadness that we share that David left this world
peacefully surrounded in love by his family. He fought a lengthy and
courageous battle with cancer and always had an upbeat positive
attitude throughout his illness as he did in life. David was born on June
1, 1954, to Sabu Shake Sr. and Isabella Shake and was the second of six
sons in the Shake Family.
David and his brothers grew up on Fisherman's Wharf and had fond memories
of their daily adventures on the wharf and the old cannery buildings on
Cannery Row. David started working with
his Dad at the Old Fisherman's Grotto in his early teens and quickly
learned how to cook. His Dad was always thinking about ways to serve fresh
fish every day and so he bought David and his older brother a commercial
fishing boat to supply the restaurant with freshly caught seafood daily.
This is where David's commercial fishing career began with his first
commercial fishing boat named ""Shake Bros"" and then the ""Sabella S II."" He
and his brother Benji fished locally together for rock cod, salmon,
albacore, and Monterey Bay prawns. David eventually purchased his own
commercial fishing boat, the ""Aloha,"" and continued to fish commercially
for the next 28 years up and down the coast of California, Oregon, and
Alaska. David's older brother Benji said the best times of his life were
when he and David fished commercially together. David's experience and
success as a fisherman earned him the respect of his commercial fishing
colleagues.
While David was a commercial fisherman, he was also very successful in real
estate, flipping homes in Pebble Beach where he lived for many years with
his family.
Upon his retirement from commercial fishing, the ocean and the boats were
still in his DNA, and he decided to start a whale watching business in Moss
Landing that brought life to the Moss Landing boat harbor with his daily
whale watching tours having two of the largest daily charter boats
operating out of Moss Landing.
David also had a love of cars. From his GTO as a teenager and his Corvette,
to a Ferrari his son Kasim surprised him with, and of course his vintage
red convertible Cadillac. David was an amazing cook, taking after his Dad.
He especially loved to cook at his home in Pebble Beach on 17 Mile Drive.
He was the best host, always making sure his family and friends had a great
meal and a wonderful time. David loved animals and was a strong supporter
of Animal Friends Rescue Project and always supported Veterans of Military
and Law Enforcement.
He was very proud of his children and their accomplishments, both
personally and in business. His son Kasim said his Dad was an amazing Dad
who made him the man he is today. David used to take Kasim steelhead
fishing at the Carmel Valley River when he was a little guy and Kasim also
fished with him commercially for prawns and herring when he was a teenager.
David loved Kasim's little Yorkie ""Chloe,"" and she would always be so
excited to see David. One of Kasim's fondest memories with his Dad was
dining at the Joël Rubichon Restaurant in Las Vegas where the two of them
feasted on a sixteen-course dinner. The next day, they drove Lamborghinis
and Ferraris at the Las Vegas racetrack as fighter jets from Nellis Airbase
flew overhead. What a great couple of days.
His son Dallas recalls how much his Dad loved their pet Pomeranian ""Molly""
that his Dad gave to him and to who he referred to as the ""Bearcub"" along
with his other two dogs Pauly and Penny. He said some of his best times
were on Christmas Day as he would wake up and his Dad would be playing the
Louis Amstrong Christmas Album while having his coffee and letting them
open their presents. One of Dallas's best memories was when his family went
to Mt. Shasta and stayed on a houseboat. Dallas says he learned so much
from his Dad about the Whale Watching Business. He observed the way his dad
never took success for granted and he always saw his dad helping people who
were struggling.
He would always find a way to help make their lives easier and better.
""What my dad instilled in me was how much respect he had for people who
worked hard to achieve their dreams."" Dallas
watched his dad and his generosity to help people during the last six
months of his life that included purchasing a small van for a young man who
was living in a tent on the side of a church. ""Those
memories will always be how I remember my Dad.""
David's daughter Serena said that she would miss the sound of her Dad's
voice and the way he would
look at her with his big brown puppy dog eyes that she said looked just
like hers. As a family, they traveled and went on many trips around the
country. David was so very proud of
each of his children, and he loved them immensely.
David's brother Chris' fondest memories are from when he was growing up. He
always wanted to ""hang out"" with David as he was very popular in his teens,
had the girls and the cars and David
always let him tag along. Chris said that the last five years with his
brother David, after his diagnosis with cancer, were the best ""brother
years"" in his life. Sister-in-law Lisa said she ""remains inspired and in
awe of David's bravery and selflessness and no matter how he felt, he
always made time to text me something inspirational or amusing. I quickly
and happily learned we had the same sense of humor!""
David's brother Sabu JR recalls a great memory when David's son Kasim
shipped his Ferrari from Washington to Monterey to join him, David, and
Dallas so all of them could take a drive down the Coast to Big Sur in their
Ferraris and have lunch at the Post Ranch – he remembers what a happy day
that was for David and for all of them.
Nephew Omar enjoyed the last few years of David's company hanging out with
him daily, often cooking meals together or watching TV, especially
basketball and football. Omar recalls that he knew
David was having a great day when he would shout out first thing in the
morning ""Santa Maria.""
David is survived by his children, Serena and her mother Kathy, Kasim
(Michelle) and Dallas (Ashley) and their mother Linda, his mother and Shake
Family Matriarch Isabella Shake, brothers Benji, Chris (Lisa), Sabu JR,
Angelo, Tene (Tracy), grandchildren Katy and Avery, great grandchildren

We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to Father Ron Shirley

strong in our Catholic faith during our time of loss and grief. We would
like to extend our thanks to Dr. Vierra and Dr. Hausdorff for the special
care they provided for David. Thank you to those of you who have reached
out to our family with flowers, cards, emails, and phone calls. We cannot
tell you how comforting it has been with all the love and prayers you have
given to us, especially to our dear Mom.
At the request of David, a private family gathering at the San Carlos
Cemetery was held and he was laid to rest next to his Dad, Sabu Shake Sr.
