David Edwin Stegall, a generous man known for his humor, intelligence, and selflessness, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on October 22, 2024, at the age of 61. Born on November 13, 1962, in Austin, Texas, David's warm spirit and engaging smile quickly became a beacon of joy for all who knew him.
David was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Janella and Roy Burgess and his paternal grandparents, Edna Ruth and Edwin Stegall.
David was the beloved son of Lou Nell Smith and Jim Stegall. His stepmother, Barbara Stegall, played a significant role in his life as well. He shared an unbreakable bond with his brother Neill Stegall (partner James Willis). His sister Alison Slade and her husband Duane were not only siblings but some of his closest confidants. David's life was further enriched by the laughter and adventures shared with his beloved nephews, Mason and Ryder Martindale, and his adored niece, Lauren Martindale.
David's capacity for love extended to his stepdaughter, Courtney Mendoza, who he embraced as his own. His grandchildren, Emma and Evan Mendoza, were the lights of his life, and he reveled in every moment spent with them, filling their time together with joy and cherished memories.
Professionally, David dedicated 19 years of service to the State of Texas Health and Human Services in facility and warehouse services, where he advanced to and excelled in the position of Management 3. His colleagues revered him for his dedication, work ethic, and the positive atmosphere he fostered. David's commitment to his work was matched only by his generosity to several local charities, to whom he enjoyed making frequent donations.
David's love for sports was a thread woven throughout his life. He found great pleasure in playing golf with friends, a testament to his competitive spirit and love for the outdoors. A true Texan at heart, David was a devoted fan of the Houston Astros, Dallas Cowboys, and Texas Longhorns, rarely missing a chance to cheer on his favorite teams.
Those who knew David will remember his quick wit and the laughter that often filled the room when he was present. His intelligence was not just a professional asset but also a gift he shared generously with friends and family, always ready with a thoughtful insight or a helping hand. Above all, David will be remembered for his selflessness, as he consistently placed the needs of others before his own, a testament to the depth of his character.
David's legacy is one of love, laughter, and generosity. It is a legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him and in the stories that will be told of his kindness, his humor, and the positive impact he had on the world around him.
David Edwin Stegall's presence will be profoundly missed, but the memories he created will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take solace in knowing that his spirit will continue to guide and uplift us, just as it did throughout his memorable life.

David was a direct manager of mine briefly, while working on 2023 office moves for Facilities - the first area I worked for in moving to Texas in late 2022, so David was one of the first people I got to meet. Because of his dedicated service to HHSC, he was knowledgeable and resourceful, but it was his straight-forward humor and how much he cared about customers (as well as family) that we related to each other, both personally and professionally. After I switched departments, his last response was months ago, but his kind words will stay with me for a long time. Can't believe he's gone! What a lovely celebration of life he had the other day - so many stories and people that were part of his life's journey.

I will miss David for his humor, knowledge in a wide variety of subjects, and caring attitude. He was professional and smart. He hired me to work with his team and help the customers until I retired. RIP David

David was a really nice person. Every interaction we had was very pleasant. I stopped by his office a few weeks ago and we talked about our grandkids and how much we love and enjoy them. He will truly be missed.

I worked closely with David for more than 10 years regarding strategic/complicated moves within HHSC. He was "the person" to go to for any issue/emergency. We were a team and we were friends. I have so much respect for David and am saddened by his loss. He was professional, go by the rules, quick witted, and just a kind and gentle person. It was always a pleasure to work with David. We did laugh a lot working together. He was well respected with HHSC how he took care of the staff and situations/aggravations.

David and I started around the same time at the State of Texas. I ran into him often at work and he was always jovial and friendly. He will be missed around here.
