Jack Stegall Obituary

Jack E. Stegall of Monroe, NC passed away Thursday, August 21, 2025. He was born October 12, 1932, in Mecklenburg County, the youngest son of the late W. E. "Lige" Stegall and Euna Black Stegall. His three brothers, Billy, Nick and Milford preceded him in death. After graduation from Oakhurst High School in 1950, he attended N.C. State College and in 1954 graduated with a civil engineering degree. At graduation, he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Corps of Engineers. He worked for a year on the original West Virginia Turnpike and on a flood control dam in Pennsylvania before reporting for two years active duty, where he served in Germany during the "Cold War." While in Germany, he met the love of his life, Ilse.

After completing active-duty service, he returned to work in the construction field where he was employed successively as office engineer, project engineer and project manager. He worked on several projects in the South, including flood control dams, tunnels on the Blue Ridge Parkway, interstate highway bridges and urban highway relocation. In 1972, he and his family moved back to the Charlotte area where he and his wife founded Cardinal Construction.

Jack was a member of Matthews United Methodist Church and of the Elizabeth Patrick Sunday School Class at that church. He was a former member of Morning Star Lutheran Church where he and his family were active for many years. Jack also belonged to the Mint Hill Masonic Lodge 742 where he was a life member. He served as Master in 1974 and for ten years was a Certified Lecturer in the Masonic ritual. He was also an amateur radio operator for over 40 years and enjoyed "talking" to people all over the US and foreign countries using the Morse Code. He held the call sign of WD4E.

Following their marriage in Germany, he and Ilse enjoyed over 65 years of happy marriage before her death in 2023. This was truly "a marriage made in heaven." Their three sons: Charles (Karin) of Rutherfordton, Frank (Sandra) of Wingate and William (Becky) of Indian Trail survive. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews. The family would also like to acknowledge the loving care provided by Tammy Ames, Kim Anderson and Pamela Jordan.

Services will be held on Wednesday, August 27, at Heritage Weddington/Matthews Chapel located at 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, NC 28104. Visitation will begin at 10:30 am and the service at 12:00 pm. A private family service will be held for the inurnment at Morningstar Lutheran Chapel in Mint Hill. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Charlotte Rescue Mission. A Visitation will be held on August 27, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Heritage Weddington/Matthews Chapel 3700 Forest Lawn Drive. Yesterday

William, reading about your father and his accomplishments in life certainly defines his life as being a special man, husband, and father. Very sorry for your loss but he lived a full life and many of his attributes live thru you for all to see.

Rest on Peace Mr. Stegall

I first met Mr. Stegall while visiting Charles one afternoon after high-school. Charles and I have been friends for well close to 53 years.

Mr. Stegall was always a kind understanding sort, but always ready to correct rambunctious teenagers! Charles and I along with brothers Frank and Will seem to always be on the verge of causing havoc on those days.

My sister best knew Mr. Stegall and always told me he was a kind gentle man. Always polite and caring.

My wife Linda and I were members of Morning Star Lutheran and attended church with Mr. Stegall and his wife while we were raising our children.

Unfirtunately, once we moved away and began attending another Lutheran church, we lost touch.

I believe that Jack and Ilse are together again in eternal love. Someday I expect I'll see them again.
